I'm interested in writing musicals. Does anyone know good information sites for this? Can you major in Musical theatre composition? what are good schools to check into for this?

Thanks in advance for your help and numerous replies ; )!

do you want to compose music for musicals? or are you thinking of book and lyrics?
If you're looking to compose the music, it'd probably be very feasible to go for a music composition major at a school with a reputable musical theatre performance program, such as Ithaca College. I also read on this site http://www.yale.edu/musicals/aboutus.htm about a yale student (eric) who is double majoring in linguistics and theatre studies, hoping to write musicals. Double majoring could be another possiblity.
I'd assume they give you some freedom as a music comp major in what you're composing for projects etc, and you can certainly take inspiration from your MT-studying peers. In the end, music composition requires the same skill regardless of the genre: a quater note is still a quarter note, ya know?
You could also do this for your undergrad, and take a look at NYU Tisch like chrism suggested for a graduate degree.

Florida State University has a great music and composition program paired with a good musical theater school. University of Michigan also seems to foster that sort of creativity. I was there this past weekend and there is a senior who is a BFA musical theater major who has written music for student-run productions as well as being a music director and accompaniest. At Michigan they encourage you to explore whatever aspect of musical theater is most interesting to you. Also, at the University of Southern California they have good music and theater and there's actually a class on Musical Theater Writing and Composition taught by Jason Robert Brown, so you might want to check that out.

BW has a great composition major. There is actually a freshman here right now who is double majoring in Musical Theatre Performance and Composition.

Oklahoma City University has an active composition degree program. It does not focus on musical theater but all types of music. The Project 21 program has several concerts each year using the talented OCU vocalists and instrumentalists.

That is true about Oklahoma City University’s music composition program. I have attended concerts of OCU’s Project 21: Music for the 21st Century featuring the work of Joel B. New, a music theater major who also studied music composition as an undergraduate and went on to NYU’s master’s program. He is a recent winner of the Jonathan Larson award. Also Project 21 composer Rick McKee is writing music for Macy’s and Orlando theme parks. Several OCU composers have put together musicals and/or chamber operas. Do a google.

There is a composition major at Hartt (University of Hartford) and occasionally the works the composition students write are not only showcased at Hartt, but also at CT’s regional theatre The Goodspeed Opera House. This is the theatre where Annie and Man of la Manch first made their debuts.

New York University has a great composition department and the ability to specialize in a certain style of your choice (including musical theater). The program is very highly acclaimed and has great faculty.

I don’t think she was talking about I’ll Be Damned because I’ll be Damned is by Broadhurst and Black who are graduates of the Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing program, not Steinhardt.

Perhaps uskoolfish is talking about We The People: America Rocks, produced by Theaterworks USA currently at the Lortel Theater? The book writer is Joe Iconis, and Joe does have a BM in composition from NYU/Steinhardt but he also is a graduate of the Musical Theater Graduate Writing Program at Tisch. While he wrote the book and some songs for this musical, many songs are by other composers as well. Two of my daughter’s friends are in the cast.
