Please correct me if im wrong but, a double major at NYU is possible if you are in the Tisch BFA MT program? I was unaware of that. Also for NYU, do you apply separately to both the tisch and the other school that has the other major? Or am i just making all of this up haha?

You can double major at both Tisch and Steinhardt. It depends on the credits you bring to the school and what major you chose. Journalism is a common double major. A friend of my daughter is double majoring with math and VP with a concentration in MT. D could have double majored in English, but chose to have 2 minors instead. Steinhardt is offering a new 5 year program: BM in VP (MT or Classical) after 4 years and then a MA Music Ed earned after the fifth year.

You would apply/ audition for the BFA or the BM degree and then declare a double major or minor later.

This is an interesting post which I ironicaly found just when something similar applies to me. I only attended college for 9 months right after High School, then dropped out to pursue a career in the military. I was injured after a bit more than 13 years in, which forced me into early retirement before I was even 40.

But I’m still very active & refuse to sit around … and I love learning. I can honestly say that I have accomplished every major goal I set for myself, and many that I DIDN’T have in mind, but am proud that happened. These include everything from helping raise a large family (5 little ones so far … all girls ), to wintering over in Antartica, to serving in war. (Might sound strange, but it’s just a family thing. All of us guys fought at some time in our life).

But the one thing missing was finishing up that college degree. I don’t actually NEED it now, since I’m disabled. But as I said, I love learning. As a DAV, I’m fortunate to be able to tap into lots of financial aid, so I finally decided to use it. Next Spring I’ll be going back to college for my Bachelor, perhaps even a Masters.

Since this is more of a “fun” thing, than something intended for a career, I chose a major that I knew I’d have alot of fun with … Music. But I also want to go ahead & throw a Minor in there too … might as well. That’s what is causing me alot of confusion. Which one will work best?

I enjoy Chemistry, History, Geology, Astronomy, & Archaeology. And if it were available, which isn’t very common, I’d like to refine my understanding of Latin. But none of those first 5 seem like they would be very easy to pursue along with a Music major. Music & say, Chemistry, just aren’t related very well. So it seems like one would almost have to take 2 completely different course selections to do any of those. And with a family, I can’t exactly stay at college for 16 hours per day for 4 years.

Latin study MIGHT be somewhat similar to Music, but that’s not offered at any of the 4 colleges I’m looking at, as best I can tell. It’s sorta … well, it IS dead, so no one really speaks it any longer. So there’s just not a huge availability of locations which teach it.

So I think I’ll probably be looking at something like a Theatre minor. That’s close to Music. Maybe Writing or Speech would be also … dunno. A Minor in Art would sure be similar, but I can draw & pain about as good as a 3-year-old & don’t think anyone could teach me how to do it any better, so I can probably write that one off. :)

Anyway, just enjoyed the discussion about this, since it’s at least a bit similar to my own story. Thought I’d throw mine in also.

P.S. I fully realize that some of what I’ve stated above may not be entirely accurate or timely … or possibly not make any sense at all. You’ll just have to forgive me in that case. I’m relatively sure that I’m probably a much older “student” than most of you are. It’s been 20 years since I was in school, so I’m a bit rusty about how it all works. :)

P.S.S. I just noticed that “20 years” sounds really old, so I’m changing that to 15 years. No, let’s make it 9 years since I was in school. Yeah, I like the sound of that a little better. :)
