I actively participate in both musical and technical theatre. I wonder if there are any colleges that have a Musical Theatre major and a Technical Theatre minor.

I did post this under College Majors accidentally. I've just recently joined this site, so I did not realize the forum rules.

I’m not any kind of expert on this question, but in general it is difficult at most schools to get a BFA in MT and have ANY kind of a minor, and still be able to make it out in 4 years - just because of scheduling logistics. Some schools will offer some kind of “certificate” or “emphasis” aspect. The minors that I am aware of are usually dance or voice/instrument related. Many of the BFAs require students to do some work in the technical side - especially in the first year or two, and perhaps offer electives that could be filled in with technical classes. Again, I’m no expert, but my guess is that programs that offer BA’s would give more flexibility in their minors, and perhaps that is a way to start looking at programs and the curriculum they may post on their websites.

Kent State offers a BFA MT and has a variety of technical theatre minors. But as mentioned above you won’t be able to do both in 4 years. Also, some schools won’t allow you to minor in the same subject as your major (both MT and tech would be considered theatre subject areas), so you would need to look into that.

You might want to call Montclair or check it out. I know right now there is a student who is in the current musical who also has been very involved in the technical side, and they do have degrees for both.
