Musical Theatre Major Auditions

okay so I'm going to be a senior in the upcoming fall (graduation: 2014) and I'm beyond stressing about auditions for my schools because I want to be a musical theatre major. My schools are

1) Muhlenberg College
2) Rider University
3) Montclair State University
4) University of the Arts, Phillie
5) University of Hartford

Financially, my family is struggling so with these close by and decently affordable schools that I really love, I'm hoping to be able to get into all of the musical theatre majors for these schools.

But what I'm worried about is my dance experience. Since money was tight I wasn't able to afford dance the last 3 years but this summer I could, but only for a few weeks. How much dance experience would I need to be this major? I'm seriously freaking out because this is my dream, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it on Broadway. But how badly will my lack of experience effect my audition? and what do they look for in a dance audition? I need help, and I need answers please. But on the bright side, I have both of my splits, I have pretty good kicks, my side leap isn't that bad and I have a single piroutte.

If anyone has any advice on dance and ALSO the music and acting portion of the auditions, please help me, I really appreciate it :)

Hi darling,
I don’t know if you’ve finished you’re auditions or not, but I am in a similar boat as far as dance. I’m a transfer and I went to Ball State for a year and auditioned for MT and they told me my problem was dance (they had spots open for the semester and I couldn’t compete with the others who were a semester ahead of me). I hadn’t been in a dance class in more than 10 years. SO I came home and I took a few classes, but financially I wasn’t able to keep it up. I’ve said all this to say so many schools are willing to help you get up to par dance wise. Some of the greatest Broadway stars did not start off dancing. What’s important is your work ethic. Another school to look at is Point Park they have an amazing program and are pretty amazing with dance even with people who don’t have previous training. When you go into the audition just try your best eyes open and find cute ways to remember the steps. Break legs & most importantly have fun. :)
