Musical theatre or Vocal Performance?

Any of you also interested in vocal performance? If so do you know anything about CMU Musical Theatre program meaning do they train the classical voice? My D was put on their priority wait list for their musical theatre program and she has to make a decision to stay there or not. If she does and gets a call to join the class she has 72 hours to make a deposit. She did not expect this and this was her only musical theatre audition. She sees herself as the next Audra McDonald meaning she ultimately wants to do musical theatre. Anyway, I don't want her to lose or stop training her beautiful voice. Having never been to this school (yeah, we'll be making a trip to Pittsburgh) we are kind of hoping for some educated opinions. Have any of you been in this situation?

There aren’t a lot of CMU MT grads, students, or parents on this forum (if any). But I’d be very surprised if the MT students didn’t study voice with the same instructors who teach the VP majors. Certainly they are the same instructors at Ithaca, and the MT students study classical singing as well as MT styles. You will definitely want to ask about this.

Thank you Prodesse! My D actually went to the unified and twitter and heard from a student and she clarified things a bit for her. Thanks again.

If you look on CMU’s website, you’ll see that there is a list of teachers in the VP program and another for MT and they are different.

Mezzo do you research for a living? Never thought to look at that. Thanks yet again.

If she gets into CMU, she should go! CMU is one of the best programs in the country. If she wants to do musical theatre for a living, she has a really good chance as a grad from CMU. If she chooses vocal performance instead, she is going to miss out on learning many of the vital skills for this profession. CMU has a stellar reputation, they would not hire subpar voice teachers. So even if they are in the musical theatre program (which is actually a plus), I am sure they teach very well and are quite skilled at working with legit singers.
