I'm a senior in high school and recently decided that a musical theatre major may not be right for me, and am now considering a major in vocal performance and either minor or double major in theatre/acting. After my first audition for a musical theatre program, I realize I don't have the personality for musical theatre. I am more familiar with the theatre, but am open to acting for the camera as well. I think I will have more opportunities with this new decision. I am a singer and an actor, but still want to be a well-rounded person.
I have done a lot of research and preparation for MT but I don't know where to begin with my new options. If anyone has suggestions of schools, I'd really appreciate it!
Here's a list of considerations:
-I would like to study in or near a big city...no cornfields (Chicago and NYC are favorites)
-I prefer the east coast or the northern states (not a fan of California, Florida, or Texas climates)
-Study abroad options are important to me (particularly French-speaking locations)
-I'm looking for a healthy vocal performance program and theatre program
-I'd like to continue studying yoga!
-I need lots of financial aid, and I know it's a little late in the game... but better late than never!

I appreciate any advice!
also, I'm new to CC, so i'm unsure I posted this correctly...

The music theater folks have a good deal of knowledge on acting/theater options, and the vocal aspects as well. The posters in the music forum are well versed in the choices for vp.

You will get the benefit of specific knowledge and experience in the requirements of seeking a performing arts path, which can have very different parameters than looking at choices for an academic program.

I agree with Violadad that the Music and MT boards will be most helpful, but a couple considerations. Check the curricula for VP degrees to see if its even possible to swing a minor with them. They’re incredibly time- and credit hour-consuming. A double major, unless you do it in B.A. programs in a liberal arts college, should be out of the question - at least within four years. You may want to give the participants on the Music boards some idea of your credentials to get valuable feedback. For Voice + enough curricular flexibility to pursue theatre I’d recommend Northwestern, but you’d have to have some academic stats to be able to get in there. Also, if you’re aiming at Voice and want to study abroad, I’d guess that it’ll likely be in an Italian- or German-speaking location; not French.

Some VP programs offer a specialization in either MT or classical voice. MY D attends NYU Steinhardt Same voice teachers, many of the same classes. Some students started as classical and switched to MT or vice versa. Everyone auditions for the same shows.

As a matter of fact, I heard the possibility that the curriculum may change to be the same for 2 years and then students will decide betwee the 2 specializations. Not sure when/if that may happen.

Research their website. Only drawback is that grades/ scores are impt, too.

SUNY New Paltz has a highly regarded Theater dept. and the cost is reasonable even for OOS. I don’t know the deadline for admissions…check the website.

As said before, please check the Theatre + Drama and Musical Theatre school sections. However, a lot of schools do require auditions to receive a BFA in theatre or musical theatre, and the deadlines to apply are subsequently earlier for these programs. You might want to look for programs that offer nonaudition BAs- there’s a big list of them on the Theatre + Drama Section I think.
