@ Momcares, that’s why there are Gen Ed requirements at many of the BFA programs! My D is still getting a wonderful education just because she does not go to Northwestern.

I am discovering that the list of schools with serious GE requirements or any real interest in academics is quite short and most of the schools on it are unfortunately in the reaches for everyone category.

actor12 - Many schools do offer honors programs that can provide more academic opportunities for students who want the more rigorous academics to go along with the MT training.

Yes, I do know people in honors programs at some of the mid-tier schools but their stats were not all that impressive so it worries me if someone with a 3.2 is considered an honors student. I think that if I don’t get in to one of the top musical theater or acting programs then I would at least want to try for a top university even with a different major. I’m in CA and could do theater at any UC, the only real reaches would be UCLA and maybe UCI.

@Lulu63 - I NEVER said, or meant to imply, that anyone not at NU is getting a bad education! I mentioned it because it sounded like a place that might be a great fit for @Gokeygal’s D based on her description of her.

Our D and many of her MT friends added several top universities to their lists along with great BFA’s, then as the application season progressed D’s priorities shifted and she actually moved the top universities to the TOP of her list. I think it’s a great idea to apply to some of those alternatives, as during the 9 months of applications your priorities could shift as well.

I really really appreciate all of the responses to this post! I guess I have a lot to think about in the upcoming months. I think I will audition for some MT and some Acting programs, and just see what happens! Thanks again for all of the responses :)

My D is trying to decide which college to attend. She is torn between Muhlenberg theater and American University MT.
Does the MT program at AU ‘measure’ up ? Is the program as well developed as the theater major at MU ? Does AU use full time faculty in the MT program ?
Help? Any thoughts ?
