Musical theatre with strong acting

Hi,
This semester I decided to transfer because after my freshman year I decided that the college I chose wasn't getting me anywhere and I just didn't see myself in the program. Afterall I am located in Ohio and want more opportunities. I've been looking at colleges in NYC, California, Chicago, and Tennessee. I was a musical theatre major at my last college and I've done musical theatre for years. Im not sure I want to do it anymore and found myself going in the direction of acting/film and singing styles like country/pop. I have been searching forever and the only college I can find that has a commercial music major is Belmont in tennessee and I've already auditioned but I need more options. And the only colleges with good acting programs I know of are like Julliard, NYU, USC, and UCLA. I want a college with a good reputation with either a musical theatre minor and a acting major or an acting major and commercial music program as well. If you could give me some ideas it would be a tremendous help! Thank you!

Hello,
I was wondering if any of you know a good musical theatre program that makes you take an acting for the camera class and is also strong in theatre/acting. I want to do musical theatre but I also want to do acting/film. Please let me know. Thank you!

Apetrel, you need to repost here [Musical Theater Major - College Confidential](Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums), or hit the report problem post button and ask the mods to move it to that sub forum. There is exceptional expertise and program knowledge there. MT transfers can be tricky, and the competition is tough. Talk with CC’s “experts”.

Good luck.

See you other post. There’s also strong cross discipline knowledge here [Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential](Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential Forums)

NYU
Muhlenberg

Elon? not sure if they have MT

Very strong acting program at Syracuse.

Elon has MT - but don’t think they have a commercial music major…

I am not sure what you are really looking for. Elon has an excellent MT program with a strong acting component - but the chances of getting into Elon as a transfer are very slim.

A friend of ours was just checking out Catawba and Belmont for the commercial music programs. They really liked what they saw at Catawba. They also have musical theatre.

University of the Arts has a very strong acting program that you can combine with a minor in MT tailored specifically for acting majors. There is also a course in acting for TV and film that many upperclassmen take. In addition, there are summer classes in acting for the camera taught through the educational department of the Walnut St Theatre, a 10 minute walk from UArts campus.

Even if you find colleges that have both acting with strong musical theatre (or musical theatre with strong acting) AND a strong commercial music program, you are likely to find that it is not possible to be involved with the training in both. Possibly if they would allow you to double major, but many BFA acting and musical theatre programs will not allow this. See you specifically looking for schools where you could do both, or looking for suggestions of schools where you could do one or the other?

Agree with KatMT: these programs tend to be very intensive and it would be difficult to do more than one at a time. I think you may need to rethink what you really want to focus on.
As mentioned before, Syracuse has a very strong acting/MT program; and they do have classes in on-camera technique.

Webster University has a musical theatre major with a strong acting program. They also take an acting for the camera class and have an L.A. showcase

Emerson also has an acting for the camera class and has a fantastic acting faculty.

Should have said"ARE you specifically looking for schools…" Not"SEE you specifically looking for schools…" Darn auto word strikes again! ;)
