i am very into musical theatre, having been in 12 musicals throughout the course of high school. I have found no reference to any production at Swarthmore. It doesn't have to be amazing, I'm just wondering if Swarthmore has 1 or 2 musicals a year that I could be in? I also wish to know if nonmajors can participate, if they exist. Thanks!

I think there's at least one musical a year, and you don't have to be a major to participate.

The musicals tend to be a little off-beat, though. Don't go there expecting to do Oklahoma and Bye Bye Birdie.

lol can you give some examples of musicals they have done? I love strange musicals, though I would like it if they did musicals that were real (e.g. not all "The Day My Math Professor Got Eaten by a Wolf")

This link takes you to an article about last springs large scale musical production.

These links will take you to newspaper articles about last fall's musical -- written by two students, a musical about middle school.

There are also numerous small scale ensemble and improv performances.

As I understand it, there are two separate types of theater productions at Swat. One groups are productions put on by the Theater department. The other are productions put on by the Drama Board student organization outside of the academic department. Both are open to non-majors.

And use the search box to search for "musical" or "theater". You might also search for "dance" if it interests you.

My impression is that these performances generate quite a bit of interest and get good attendance.

At a place like Swat, if you want to be involved in stuff like this, you almost certainly can be.

erdna,
Last spring's large scale production, "Lucky Stiff," was put on during the course of Parents Visiting weekend. It was excellent! Acting, singing, staging, etc. They were supposed to put on Little Shop of Horrors, but some issue arose. There is also a possibility of acting in a show at one of the other Tri-Co schools, Haverford or Bryn Mawr. For example, my S, a rising senior, was asked by a student at Haverford to audition for a small scale musical there.
