My D wants to study MT but she has been rejected from the audition CAP21 summer program. Her voice is good but still developing and she hasn't had much audition experience outside of the high school and local stuff. Her unweighted GPA is 3.45 and she attends a difficult private school. Her first ACT 31 and she's being tutored to raise it. SHe's taken a demanding course load but not the most demanding, including two difficult foreign languages throughout high school. I'm feeling like she's middle of the road academically and voice talent-wise and am worried she will not get into any MT program. Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare her for next fall-senior year?
THanks

You should post your question on the MT discussion forum. Go to the main discussion page and look for the section on majors. MT is one of the forums there.

By all means follow shennie's advice. The direct link is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/

cgm5553 - There are so many people on here who will have good advice for you. Many of the parents here have already been through auditions with their kids and have a wealth of knowledge they are so willing to share.

My D is also a hs junior so we will not be going through the audtions until next fall/winter also. Make sure that as your D looks at schools that she puts together a good list of both audition and non audition programs. If you can visit some of the schools this spring or summer that is also a great way to see what she likes. Make sure she is with a good voice teacher and also taking some dance class each week.

Although you D may not have a lot of experience, what will really count next year is the audition. She should spend her time finding the right songs and monoluges that will help her to stand out.

There are also very good summer programs that you may want to look into that are non audition. These are still very competitve and you will find a lot of talent at them also. You should look right away as many fill up quickly. My D is attending a 4 week program in Philly at UARTS. It is a training based program taught by the faculty and they will have mock auditions and give feedback to the students at the end of the program. I believe that there is another NYU program that is also non audition as well as Northwestern (part is non audition and part is audition). CMU is non audition, but you would have to see if they are still accepting applications.

Good luck! I'm sure others will here will give you great advice.

CMU is a GREAT program. Check with them but they might still be taking in applications, and if you get everything in in a timely manner, it's not super competitive to be accepted. Good luck!

cgm, a good place to start here on the MT forum is the FAQ thread, it is located toward the top of the thread list it is listed in black as IMPORTANT: FAQ Link (in blue) here you will find the Big List to give you an idea of which school are audition and those which are not (safties) as well as lots of good info. Good Luck!
