I’m planning to participate in a musical and a jazz band.

As for the musical, is there any requirement such as singing ability?

Also, can you introduce me to some jazz bands @ brown. The Brown Website does not seem to have anything about jazz activities in the “Student Groups” link.

Generally speaking, of course, if you're in a musical you're going to have to...sing. :)

Seriously though, Brown has an excellent theatre program. I couldn't tell you about jazz/a cappella groups, but knowing Brown I'm sure they're fantastic and that there's someone on here who can.

My son is in one of the all male a cappella groups. These guys are very talented (and I have heard a few of the other groups around campus as well, and they are all talented singers)-they practice 3 days/week and take it very seriously. They put on shows throughout the year, record each year, do concerts and arch sings. There are auditions in the fall and early spring as well as call backs and don't expect to get into any if you can't carry a tune.
The same goes with the musicals. He has been in a couple and there are rehearsals every day for a couple of months preceeding the show. Again, you must love doing this and be prepared. I don't know much about the jazz band but I would expect the orchestra, chorus and bands also expect you to have some experience and passion as well as dedication since you do spend alot of time rehearsing. I know that for those who just want to participate in a theater/music related activity, it exists-you can help with scenery, back stage stuff or join some non competitive group. But, for the really dedicated and talented there are many opportunities-some student directed things, some faculty related. These all require talent and a real committment.
