Musicial Theater Where?

Hi, i am in 10th grade and are looking for a litle bit of information on the best schools to go to for a major in Musical Theater. I of course know about NYU, Julliard, and Maramount but i know there must be others? any good names come to mind?

You would be well served to pose your question and spend some time reading threads here: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=501%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=501</a></p>

Juilliard does not offer musical theater.

Maramount? Did you mean Marymount Manhattan College?

why not try VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) for a change of pace? It has the #1 public arts (performing, paper-art, etc.) in the country. I've visited campus, and it is a pretty well-recognized university here in VA

If you look under college majors, you will see that there is a CC site for musical theater. There are a ton of current MT students, parents of students, professionals in the field and college counselors that contribute regularly there.

I always heard that Indiana University was THE place to go for musical theatre.

How about Oklahoma City University?

Wagner has a very good program and its location in NYC can't be beat.

Indiana is THE place for music/vocal performace. They have justed started their musical theatre progam, so it will be interesting to see how they succeed.

there is no one "THE" program for ANYTHING!!!!

RE: Post #3

VCU is a good BFA and MFA theatre program, but does not offer Musical Theatre. The three schools in VA that I know do are Shenandoah (private [BFA]), James Madison University (public [BA/ BM]), and Christopher Newport University (public [Music Theatre/Dance Track within the BA Theatre major]).

In the interest of full disclosure... I teach in the MT program at JMU. :)

I agree with KatMT to an extent.

Shenandoah has a very well renouned program.

CNU is definitely getting better. That is my fallback school.

I don't know much about JMU.

As for VCU, they have a very good program in acting, but they seirously admit into their program anything that moves, even if you have to poke it with a stick. My sister is a theater ed major at VCU and I have TONS of friends that go there for theater. Some are very good, but some are not very good at all. One of my friends is supposed to be a Junior theater major, but he spends all his time getting drunk and high, so he's technically a 3rd year freshman. He has failed almost all of his classes, yet he hasn't been kicked out of the program, nonetheless VCU. They also kinda lack in the connections category though. They don't do showcases, as far as I am aware.

I'm not completely putting down VCU. It is a good school for theater, but they need to be a little more selective. I would definitely suggest VCU if you want to pursue photography or sculping or something, but as for theater, it's alright, but sometimes the less well-known schools can be better

Anyone who is starting the search for MT college, should go to the top of this thread list and click on FAQ link, in there they will find all sort of good info including the BIG LIST of schools that offer MT programs including if they are selctive or offer non-audition entry. By using the SEARCH function in the blue bar at the top of the page you can retrieve discussion regarding many, many schools, experiences with on campus visits and auditions. Re: above posts, I wasn't aware that Kansas State had an MT program at all. As far as Indiana is concerned, yes the Jacobs School of Music is a heavy hitter particuarlly in Vocal Performance and has an especially strong masters program in VP, as far as MT goes, having a new program, they will undoubtedly grow to a successfull program, but you might want to look at other programs that have been around a while and have a proven track record. As you will see on this site as you read along that gaining entry in most MT programs is quite tough, so you should have your sights set on several schools, safetys, reaches and matches. Good Luck!

CCM, Wright State, and Kent State are probably the 3 best schools for MT in Ohio! All have extremely reputable programs!

If you can, try to avoid using "best" when referring to colleges. There is no best. "Best" is the one that best fits you. However, recommending certain colleges that are reknown or have great reputations is fine. What may be an appropriate way to put it is that schools X, Y, and Z have extremely reputable programs, not that they are "the best."

In terms of Ohio, I am sure that CCM, Wright State and Kent State have reputable programs. Likely CCM is more reknown than the other two. But I would not suggest that these are the three "best" programs in Ohio. For example, Ohio has some other good programs such as Otterbein and Baldwin-Wallace, among others. They are quite reputable as well. If we can avoid classifying schools as "best", it likely would help members more, let alone be more accurate. "Reknown" or "reputable" or "recommended" are a different matter, however.

soozievt, i don't even know you, but from about 2 years of lurking here, can I just say that i LOVE reading your posts. whether they are informative or just downright funny, you brighten my day.

well, bwaychic....you brightened my day too! :D

Glad to help and be a part of this great MT community.

I enjoy reading students' journeys like yours and it is great to read about how it is going at your colleges. I truly learn so much. Keep us posted!

Thank again for the appreciative post. It is always nice when a student does that!
