I've been playing music (guitar and piano) for a while now, but I have no clue where to begin with contests, awards, competitions, etc (as the title may suggest).

I know there are music societies, but what else?
I've heard about All Region, All State, etc. but is that for public schools only?

I’ve been playing guitar for ages and consider myself pretty talented. I won several awards in middle school for band (Bass Clarinet), which obviously don’t count for anything, but dropped out of band in eighth grade. In the HS Jazz Ensemble I was a soloist in the competition in a national competition in which our ensemble won 1st… just missed out on the best soloist to the damn sax player. >_>

Ask your band teacher, or if you don’t have that option, have someone who to be in a public school get some info for you.

Our school has a lot of mini-bands and they somehow find so many events.

My friend (who is insane on the piano) has already won scholarships to summer programs (ex. Idywild Piano thingy)/colleges…she found out through our community’s public library and her piano teacher.

In NY private school kids are eligible for all-county and all-state but have to get forms and things through the public school they WOULD be going to if they had not chosen to attend the private school (my voice teacher told me of a kid at a Jewish private school near me who did NYSSMA through my middle school).

Can’t help you on the previous question, but for pianists there should be something like "X"MTA competition every year, as in “First letter of your state’s name” Music Teachers Association-sponsored competition. It starts at a district level, then those who qualify go up to state. I’m pretty sure there’s a national one too, but to be eligible to enter your teacher has to be a member of the national music teachers association. Which can be a complication.

And for piano, just look up random composers’ names followed by the word “competition” and you’ll probably get a bunch of pretty impressive/prestigious competitions lol. However, I have yet to find one held even remotely close to where I live. Which is, well, nowhere, but still.
