Musician's Institute - Is this a good choice?

My son is very interested in this school (he is a high school Jr.) and I am finding it hard to encourage him. Has anyone had experience or know of anyone who has had experience with this school? I've read different views and although it sounds like a great start, this is my first to go into college. Just trying to get him all the facts. He is a great guitarist (self taught) and currently is in the music program at his school. He is also a member of a "garage band". He also works on his equipment and is interested in learning how to make/fix guitars, amps, etc. Other than that he has had no other training. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

guitaristsmom, welcome.

This is not my specific area of “expertise”, but I’m going to point you in a couple of directions.

First, I’ve asked the moderators to move this thread to CC’s Music Major forum [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums) where you will reap the benefits of extensive experience and insight into a vast number of music options.

You may or may not be aware that Musician’s Institute is a for profit institution, not a typical not for profit educational institution as are the bulk of schools discussed on CC. There is some info here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/557007-college-degree-neccessary-music-industry.html?highlight=musicians+institute</a>. It is not a typical college experience.

Other options might include Berklee, Belmont, USC/Thornton’s Popular Music program, UDenver/Lamont, The New School’s Jazz and Contemporary program. These are highly competitive audition driven admits, and without professional assessment as to your son’s skill sets and potential, they may or may not be viable.

If you search within the music major forum for “guitar”, “contemporary”, or the school name as keyword, you’ll come up with a multitude of prior threads. I’d suggest also reading some of the past posts by Steve M., raddad, and playsthemdrums from within that subforum.

If you have problems locating or searching, let me know and I’ll be happy to pull some additional thread links.

Thank you violadad! I welcome your suggestions.

Another potential source of information are the Master list threads http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a.html</a></p>

There’s a link near the beginning of each year’s thread to the prior one. The lists go back to four admissions cycles.

If you go to the last post in each, you’ll have the most comprehensive list by poster name, school, instrument and degree type. You can search for posts by specific user name.

Again, if you need help navigating or have issues searching, I’m happy to pull some threads.

I came across this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/752896-music-schools-embrace-contemporary-musicians-suggestions-requested.html</a>.
