I just wanted to know about Muslims in IVY League and to schools, i know that there are a lot of Muslims that go to these schools but i was wondering if anyone that is Muslim or not could give any insight on the Islamic community at top schools...

Have you tried checking the web sites of Ivies and connecting with members of organizations for Muslims? There probably are such organizations, and the web site probably lists names and e-mails of officers.

Here's a link to a list of some Islamic organizations at colleges: http://www.google.com/Top/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Islam/Organizations/Student/United_States/

Thanks for the quick reply and the link but i also just wanted to hear people's actual experiences from CC..THANKS!

okay..first of all, i wasn't talking about how they make up the largest percentage of people...i'm talking about the few that are their...

You'll probably get more answers if you have a title like, 'Would like to hear of experiences of Muslims at Ivies" and post on the forums for the Ivy colleges.

Your present title is so vague that it's not likely to attract the posters whose info you want. You'll get even more detailed and personal info if you follow my advice and connect with officers of Islamic student organizations at Ivies. Many people don't want to put their biz on public boards like CC, so try other methods of getting the info you want.

Sarah, that sounds slightly antisemitic.

Sheed, I have a muslim friend who's going to Princeton, but I don't think that the strength or volume of the Muslim community really concerned her that much. She's pretty progressive (although she does wear a head covering) and has done work with various jewish and queer organizations and, quite frankly, was more concerned with the journalism program.

Uhh, how is what Sarah said antisemetic?

jojodevka is probably referring to "anti-semitism" in the broad definition of the word "semite" meaning middle-eastern (includes arabs and muslims).

really though, the term has come to mean "anti-jewish" in today's society - simply put, that's how it's used. Some people like to use it the old way to sound smart or informed or whatever.

Just so poster #5 knows jews are white.

Lmao Pwned

What about Hispanic or African jews? Blanket statements are never a good idea.

If we want to talk about Jews then let's talk about it here:

Let's leave this thread to people who want to talk about Muslims

sorry didnt mean to stir controversy

Me_Duh - I think she meant it the same way someone would say that "the percentage of Christians is higher than the percentage of whites". That doesn't imply that some Christians aren't white - just that there are people of that religion from other ethnicities, making the total population higher than the population of white students.

But I won't get any further into the Jew argument, as funployee has posted a link for that.

To the OP - try schools in Chicago, such as Northwestern and UChicago. Not technically Ivies, but top schools nonetheless. They may not have huge islamic populations themselves, but the city as a whole is very muslim-friendly. I'm sure you could find whatever you need there.

I don't know if the OP is looking beyond the Ivies at all. However, if he or she is, I'd point out that U of Michigan certainly has a sizeable muslim population.

lol, I'm not looking for schools with big Muslim populations or anything like that.......please read my post again......way to take over my post..

"way to take over my post"

Sometimes discussions on a thread go beyond the narrow range of the original request, particularly when the thread title is very open as your is. There can still be value in that, since for every question asked there may be a number of similarly interested students reading the responses with avid interest.

Well, the college's Islamic community is going to be similar to the area's community most of the time, so I will agree with world changer- Chicago is very Muslim friendly. I only know of three muslims that go to top schools, one at UChicago, one at Columbia, and one at NYU. So, I will generalize that big northern cities are your best bet to find a strong Islamic community.

I would say your best bet is to look into organizations intended for Muslim students--most schools have at least one dedicated to Muslims. Contact somebody involved with that organization and ask them the questions that you have.
