can someone help separate the list into what we should actually bring and what we may as well just buy once we get there?

"that's a lot of stuff to bring...
can someone help separate the list into what we should actually bring and what we may as well just buy once we get there?"

You will need to prioritize the list for your own personal requirements,
depending on where you go to school and if you're in a double, triple or suite. No one person will bring all of this the first term of one's freshman year. You and/or your roommates/suitemates will acquire some of these items over your 4-year college stay.

These are terrific list of items to consider, but ultimately, you will need to decide for yourself what is needed and when.

is a water filter necessary?

is the water clean? I don't mind water out of our water spickets, but some people just really like to have purified water. it's their preference. you'll find out once you get there. Water filters tend to be big, so they may not fit in your little dorm fridge.

Clothes

Hygiene- Toothbrush, toothpaste, and bathroom supplies

(Bring two of all your necessities! For example: toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toothbrush,
etc. Once my toothbrush fell into the sink, and I was so disgusted because 25 people used the same sink. I threw out my toothbrush but then realized I didn’t have a new one in my room to use so I had to go buy a new one). –quote from a book

Computer (desktop vs. laptop)—whatever saves space

printer

TV

VCR/DVD player

TV tuner for your computer to watch TV on your computer and save space.

Phone

Stereo with Headphones

Alarm Clock

Small first-aid kit with basic health supplies

Hangers

Lamp

Comfortable rolling chair

Refrigerator

Small Microwave

Storage crates or “space-saver” under-bed storage containers

Small bookshelves or filing cabinet to store notes and papers

Posters—to liven up the room

Door stuff- dry erase message board with a marker (for leaving messages); key chain, and a doorstop for friends coming and going

A yearbook or photo album

A fan

Start saving those Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons now. FYI, the store will honor a coupon even if the expiration date has passed. They send me about one coupon a month so by the end of the summer you will be able to buy four or five of your "must haves" at 20% off.

dude......

CONDOMS! =D hahah JP....or am i o_O

oh and soap.....none of u guys listed soap....

Ya'll think I should bring my guitars? I dunno if I'd drive my roomates crazy (one would be sharing the room with me, the other two share the bathroom) or what.

Okay. I go to a boarding school and these are some essentials in my world besides the obvious personal hygiene stuff ...

Laptop (dorm desks are small)
Printer
Headphones
TV
DVD player
Hutch for desk
Desk Lamp
Floor lamp
Small fridge
Small microwave
Clock
Cleaning supplies
AIR FRESHENER!!!
Laundry detergent
Iron and small board
Egg crates
Bed Sheets
Cervical pillow
Blankets
Lotsa Ramen
Sleep mask (For when roomie pulls and all-nighter.)
Soft earplugs (College dorms can be loud and my current roomie snores.)
Aerobics step

I’m gonna try to get my roomie to wait to get to school before deciding on decorations so we can bond while shopping. Hopefully, we can at least get matching comforters and be semi-color-coordinated so I don’t go insane.

does it seem weird to anyone else that people keep listing lots of food? there are grocery stores pretty much everywhere, why do we need to pack so much food?

True but sometimes it is just better to not have to shop. I like to have a bag of chips or cheez-its, milk, water, yogurt, and granola bars lying around. It just makes snacking when you need a boost or get hungry easier. Note that most of the food above are fairly healthy. Sometimes my parents send sweets and candy for no reason and I have no willpower and eat them all haha. Anyways it just saves time you might not have. Especially if the grocery store is a few blocks down and you don't want to be carrying a gallon of milk and a bunch of groceries back. I dunno, I just think it would be annoying.

...you can't bring enough food from home to last you until break...you're going to need to go to the store sometime...well anyway theres no way im paying to have chips flown halfway across the country

Ah ... This one is young in the ways of Ramen. ;) No need to have it flown halfway across the country, but a couple of cases go a loooooong way and they're worth the space in the car if you're driving up.

Oops! Microwavable bowls, glasses, mugs, and silverware are a must, too. OH YEAH!!! Instant coffee is a must unless you want to pack a coffee maker. I doubt there'll be much time for grocery shopping the first week. I plan to have a hidden bottle of Merlot, too; but, don't tell anyone. ;)

Haha you can stock up at the beginning. Sorry my parents are only two and a half hours away and whenever they come up they usually just bring some stuff or get it before they see me. My non-milk stuff lasts about 3-4 weeks.

Most important on my list: digital camera. I'm going to start snapping pictures the moment the bus stops off at the university campus. Then I'll annoy my roommate and take pictures of her unpacking.

Oh, and a cell phone to reassure the 'rents that I haven't gotten kidnapped by wayward bus drivers before arrival at the uni.

bring body wash instead, bars of soap are yucky after they get wet
