Any current UMD students have tips on what to bring to dorms?

So far, I'm thinking:
- minifridge
- rug (though not sure what size because I don't know the size of Ellicott dorms)
- bed essentials (pillow, sheets, etc).
- bed risers
- laptop
- fan

Still iffy on:
- what TYPE of fan to bring

Also to other freshmen - what are you bringing? Any input would be great. Thanks!

To add to your good list already, some things to organize your desk, underbed storage of some sort, and a plus adapter that makes it a lot of plugs (the name of those things escapes me).

I brought an oscillating, stand fan last year and it worked well. It was a little bit in the way but gave the best coverage of the room. My roommate brought a boxfan that we stuck in the window.

mellow, don't worry about rug size. you can either buy a ridiculously overpriced one that will fit your room on move-in day, or just buy a smaller one that won't cover the whole room. it's a lot easier to keep tile floors clean than carpeted floors, and with a couple small rugs, you can put one by your bed and one by your desk (or wherever).

My rrom was the biggest room on the floor with one exception last year. I bunked up and got a sofa. It was a big ass sofa too. After you see if your room is big enough i would get a sofa. I got mine from IKEA and it only cost 130 and it was a pull out too. Not exactly a futon but it did turn into a bed. Even with the sofa i had more space in the middle of the room than most :D

Me and my roommate went with the L config (figure it out ;)). If you are averse to bunking/lofting but want a lot of space, this is probably the best way to do it. We but the fridge and my dresser in the closet to add even more space. We had a good 6x8 area of open rug in the middle of our room.

Yeah - brother was just on campus for soccer camp and used his phone to make a video of his Elkton dorm room for me. There was a surprisingly large closet, but for lack of space the bed was blocking it! DEFINITELY lofting. I think climbing up those things every night would be ridiculously annoying (esp. for me; I'm short!), but I guess I'll get used to it.

flyer umd sent says that we have 10" clearance. with 5" bedrisers, does that equate to .... 15" clearance? (woo i'm a math genius) just making sure. i'm going to be buying lots of plastic storage containers before i get there.

suggestion about plastic storage: they're more expensive, but spring for the ones with pull-out drawers instead of the ones with a top that comes off. getting on your hands and knees to drag a container out from under your bed and then putting the top back on and pushing it back gets old very quickly. those are fine for stuff you don't need that often, but if you're going to be keeping food or clothes in them, the drawer-type ones are useful.

yeah and also, dust accumulates on these storage boxes, so if u have bad allergies, and u take them out and the dust goes flying everywhere, the rest of your day is filled with sneezes and itchy eyes. or at least for me.

FYI on the fridge--UMD doesn't really care about the size of the fridge you bring. My roommate and I had a full half fridge that could store a lot of stuff.
