Is taking a seminar class first year mandatory? I would rather not take a seminar section because I heard cases where the credit didn't transfer to other schools and since my major choice is tentative at the moment. However, I received an email stating that I had to schedule a seminar this fall. Is there any consequences if I ignore the warning or can I avoid taking a seminar altogether?

you must take a seminar first year so you can take it in teh fall or spring

??????

What if I still don't want or can't take it (not possible to schedule) on my second semester?

I think taking a FYS your first year is priority. If it is not possible to schedule it for the Spring semester, you can/have to drop a 3-credit course to fit it in. It's always possible.

i find those seminars useless, especially since they don't transfer.

yeah you must take is first year no matter what...fall semester for me a lot of them were filled since my ftcap was so late so now im stuck with harder courses first semester like chem 110 and 111,econ004, math 141, and phys211 but then i will have an easier one in the spring

The seminar is required. The only way you can get out of it is if you do the Leadership Jumpstart class offered by the SHC.

So what do I do if it is my second semester and cannot schedule the seminar(no availability/time) ?

Also, what seminar are computer science majors supposed to take?

This is the meail I got:

" If you cannot or do not complete the FYS requirement by the end of the Fall ‘07 semester, you will be required to substitute a course for the FYS that will be determined by your major department after you are admitted to a major. In all likelihood the designated substitute course will be a 3-credit technical requirement."

What do they mean by technical requirement course?

To my knowledge, all majors have technical requirements. They should have a list of classes that count towards your technical requirement for our major. I think, it's to your advantage, to take a FYS this Fall semester, or you'll have to take an extra 3-credit course.

Make an appointment with a guidance counselor. If you are in the College of Engineering, contact the Engineering Advising Center at 208 Hammond Building, (814) 863-1033 or visit this website

to schedule an appointment. I am sure someone there can help you out.

I thought computer science wasn't in the college of engineering. I heard that from somewhere.

compsci is in the college of engineering

these are the fall 07 engineering seminars. (click on scheduling and then fall 07) I think you can take any of them but as karp4170 said it would be good to check with an advisor. You were planning on switching to engineering, have you done that?

There are many uses for these seminars beyond the credit you get for them, trying something new, seeing if you like it, also they are small classes and a great way to meet other kids in your major, who you will be working with in the future.

Thank you for the link rlm, the seminars for my major are already full. I might have to take the 3 course alternative instead, which I don't mind as long as I get to decide which semester to take it. Let's see...

I don't think it HAS to be in your major, as you have to take it your first year and no one has a definite major yet then.
There are openings in Ham Radio and also Lego Robot Design.

I would still recommend talking to an advisor. Even if the sections are full, an advisor might be able to get you into a first year seminar (even one that is full). It never hurts to try. The worst thing that can happen is nothing and the best thing that can happen is that you get into a seminar of your choice. Also, as rlm919 posted, the first year seminar doesn't have to be in your major.

"There are openings in Ham Radio and also Lego Robot Design."

ahaha Thank you rlm, that was very amusing for a while there.
- I wanted to take these two specific seminars and they are full; I am not enthusiastic about taking any random FYS just to fulfill the requirement if it doesn't interest me whatsoever. I will contact someone for assistance.

Thank you for the help everyone.

I didn't take a first-year seminar. I just had to fill out a form that my advisor gave me for a FYS substitute. Just talk to your advisor, like others have said.

Actually my son took the radio one; he was cs as well. I don't think it was his first choice either but he enjoyed it.

Port, what kind of substitute did you choose?
