Must Read About Yale

a must read in response:
originally from the New York Times Magazine

america is a great place and this is proof of it. everyone has opportunities.

Before I read this article I was unsure about the Hashemi at Yale situation, but I am pleased to say the Fox article completely made up my mind - Best wishes there Rahmatullah!

Is this really what passes for journalism these days? This is a horribly researched (Hashemi a normal freshman?!), tackily written 'story' - with a strong facist leaning to boot. Gibson is a moron.

'Thats MY Word'

That is a rather stupid piece. The Taliban, as atrocious as they might have been, were not behind the 9/11 attacks. This guy was a spokesperson for a government which harbored Bin Laden, not a co-conspirator as some here seem to believe. Hashemi, as most sources point out, was a protege of one of the moderate members of the Iraqi government and has himself been offered a position in the new coalition government of Afghanistan. The Goebbels comparison is flawed. A better comparison would be if the Bulgarian government granted refuge to Adolph Hitler after WWII and deciding whether or not to admit the Bulgarian ambassador's secretary.

Hey, I ve just finished reading your thread. I have to say that your points are awesome. It struck me so hard that you, as an American student, have such a liberal mind. I think US needs more guys like you to fight terrorism and regain support from the middle east. Thinking about campaigning for the next US president? You Should! =)
By the way, have you been admitted by Yale?

Whoa...I didn't realize the other thread on this.

And there is nothing wrong with FNC.

Why would anyone dismiss news because of the source? Are you that gasp close-minded?

That being said, it's an opinion. Gibson is open to his opinion. He thinks those who harbor terrorists are morally culpable for terrorism.

SonataX,

Come on. This guy did not harbor Bin Laden. Does anybody really think he had any influence on that particular decision? The guilty by association argument really has no merit.

The arrogance with which you Yalies denouncing Fox News is nothing short of staggering. How many of you have actually watched it? Pass.

I'm not saying Fox News is the best news station out there, it's biased and sensationalist like the rest. It's simply more open about it. I read it in conjunction with liberal media sources to figure out the story for myself. Step out of the left-of-center echo chamber.

JohnnyK, chill out. I was just poking fun I did not really mean anything by it. I watch FOX, CNN, BBC, and World News tonight every day for the most part because I know every one of them is biased (just in different ways). I live in Georgia where everyone either doesnt watch news or watches Hannity and listens to Rush. I am the cynic for student counterparts that only get this side of the story.

March 23rd Wall Street Journal
<a href="http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/%5B/url%5D">http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/</a></p>

Another good article...<a href="http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/ClintonTaylor/2006/03/23/190918.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/ClintonTaylor/2006/03/23/190918.html</a></p>

It's interesting you chose John Fund's column. Take a look at this one: <a href="http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110008115%5B/url%5D">http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110008115</a></p>

Meredith Startz, the president of the YPU, actually sent an email to everyone explaining how John Fund flat out lied about the situation. The original topic was military recruitment. When Flagg Youngblood, who had asked to bring John Fund with him, asked to also talk about Hashemi, the YPU said no, because they had already invited the professor from the Yale Law School who had argued against the Solomon Amendment.

I Am A Thirty Year Old Who Has A 3.7 Gpa And Is Applying To Eli Whiteny For Fall 2006. I Believe It Was Unorthodox Is Admitting
This Student At First. However, He Is Part Of Eli Whitney Who
Not Planning To Earn A Degree And The Taliban Were Defeated Only
Pockets Remain. The Us Govt Let This Student Study, I Guess
If There Not Worried We Should Not Be Either.

Hashemi and Gibson are equally extremist. However, Hashemi might be qualified while Gibson is just an idiot.

Don't blame the fact that you didn't get into yale on the fact that Hashemi is there. He isn't taking up your space. Don't worry.

Are universities supposed to be places where everyone agrees? I certainly hope not. Can Hashemi learn from the principles of liberal democracy that an American university can teach? I certainly hope so. Is Yale's decision the rest of the world's business? ABSOLUTELY not. Private universities exist to be provocative. They exist precisely to do what the public realm, whose decisions are made based on outward appearance and not on fact, cannot do. They exist to be bastions of development of understanding and learning. Gibson shows no comprehension of the actual situation and obviously is lacking in his homework. Yale and Yalies don't mind Hashemi; what right do those who have no idea what they are talking about and have no conncetion to Yale have to butt in?

perhaps because gossip and busybodiness is our essential human pasttime (intelligent 'dasein'?)

Can't you guys bury this already. it's 2 months old.
