Let's discuss how the University of Florida is ranked on Princeton Review:

Best Career/Job Placement Services - Ranked 13th overall last year (Should be in the Top-10 in my opinion. The CRC is Located at the Reitz Union is one of the best places to find internships, and for permanent placement, alot of UF Alumni hire thru them).

Students Study the Least - Ranked 1st overall last year (This is way too high in my opinion. This is a direct result of winning all of those championships, and notice this summer they started giving out minuses? - Should be ranked in the Top-15)

Best College Library - Not Ranked (Well we have Library West which is without doubt one of the top college libraries out there - Should be ranked in the Top-25).

Student Happy with Financial Aid - Not Ranked (Florida Bright Futures, Pre-Paid, Florida Opportunity Scholars Program, Lombardi Scholars Program, and the Reitz Scholars Program - Should be ranked in the Top-10).

Diverse Student Population - Not Ranked (Over 25% of the student body is minorities, and about 8% are international. We also have a very strong Jewish population on campus - Should be ranked in the Top-25).

Gay Community Accepted - Not Ranked (The Pride Student Union at UF is one of the strongest LGBT organizations in the country - Should be ranked in the Top-20).

Everyone plays Intermural Sports - Ranked 4th overall last year (This is about right in my opinion)

Students pack the stadium - Ranked 1st overall last year (No doubt about it we deserve the top spot here).

Best College Newspaper - Ranked 7th overall last year (Alittle too low in my opinion. The Alligator is amazing, and they have produced a tremendous amount of successful journalists - Should be ranked in the Top-5).

Best College Theater - Not Ranked (Don't understand why. We have 5 performing arts venues - Constance Theater, the Phillips Center, the University Auditorium, the Baughman Center, and the O'Connell Center - Should be ranked in the Top-15).

Best Athletic Facilities - Ranked 4th overall last year (About right - we have the Southwest Rec Center, the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, A gym at the O'Connell Center, numerous pools, numerous IM Fields, etc).

Party Schools - Ranked 1st overall last year (Too high in my opinion. This is only because of our athletic success. This place was not that crazy during the Zook era - Should be in the Top-10).

Major Frat and Sorority Scene - Ranked 10th overall last year (Too low in my opinion. Over 5,000 Greeks total. 26 fraternities, 16 sororities, Florida Blue Key, Order of the Omega, and some of the nicest houses in the country - Should be ranked in the Top-5).

Most Beautiful Campus - Not Ranked (We should be ranked here. Just look at the Campus Historic District and tell me that UF does not have one of the prettiest campuses out there - Should be ranked in the Top-15).

Dorms like Dungeons - Ranked 10th overall last year (Too high in my opinion. Alot of the facilties are historic and amazing looking. Also have Keys, Springs, Lakeside, Hume, and Beaty Towers which are very nice - Should be ranked in the Top-25).

Jock School - Ranked 2nd overall last year (Alittle too high in my opinion. Yes alot of jocks and greeks - but also alot of indie, LGBT, academics, pagans, snobs, techies, internationals, religious, nerds, harry crishnas, politicos, musicians - basically you name it UF has got it - Should be ranked in the Top-10).

Great College Towns - Not Ranked (Don't understand why. Basically Gainesville's number one resource is taking care of the college students. The locals are nice, there are a number of bars, keg parties, and cheap housing/food - Should be ranked in the Top-15).

So basically UF should be ranked high in everything?

Biased much?

The list seems pretty accurate to me. A lot of the dorms are historic, which I guess is a euphemism for really old, but that doesn’t mean people want to stay in them. (Broward)

The campus really isn’t that diverse when you look at it either.

A lot of the rankings are subjective. I really wouldn’t get caught up in the semantics. Just because UF isn’t ranked in the top 25 most beautiful campuses doesn’t prove UF doesn’t have a beautiful campus. It just isn’t one of the top in the country, a sentiment that might be true when compared to some universities.

I go to UF and this is ridiculous. The dorms are terrible. Housing isn’t really cheap. The campus is beautiul, but nothing compared to lots of other places. Library West is, without a doubt, NOT one of the greatest college libraries - not bad, sure, but not the best. Gainesville is nice, but I can think of a plethora of other cities that have more to offer.

1st - Princeton Review is not affiliated with Princeton University (however the founder did graduate from this esteemed instition in 1981).

2nd - The rankings are based on how UF students rank the school. The point of this article is to spread awareness of UF strengths and some weaknesses.

3rd - Obviously I do not think that UF should be ranked in all of these categories but I think they should atleast be in the running for some of them.

4th - I never said the dorms were good, and said they should be ranked in the Top-25 for worst overall. I stand by my statement that it is not in the Top-10 for worst overall. Also the housing prices are cheap when compared to the national average.

^ It’s kind of a wish list to be ranked in all of these different categories (and UF has a legitimate chance at alot of them). Still Princeton Review is going to only give us a few of them. I am also convinced that Princeton Review seems to have a dislike for the University of Florida for some reason. I think they are heavily slanted in favor of the small Liberal Arts Colleges and the Ivy League.

Also: I wish we were not ranked so highly as a Party School or Students Study the Least (but like I said earlier this is largely because of all the National Championships that we have won as of late).

“The campus really isn’t that diverse when you look at it either.”

How do you figure that?

27.2 percent of the student body represents minority populations with 8.4 percent African Americans, 11.6 percent Hispanics, and 7.3 percent Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders.

The University of Florida is ranked second overall in the United States for the total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to African Americans, and third overall for Hispanics. UF ranks fifth overall in total number of doctoral degrees awarded to African Americans, and second overall for Hispanics, and third overall in total number of professional degrees awarded to African Americans, and first overall for Hispanics.

In a 2007 survey conducted by the Institute of International Education the University of Florida ranked 17th overall in the United States for the largest total number of international students. This was more than any other university in Florida.

Best College Theater

Diverse Student Population

Student Happy with Financial Aid

Gay Community Accepted

Great College Towns

I saw a fairly academic paper online somewhere on the very subject a while ago when I was researching schools. UF got very bad marks (lots of homophobia openly displayed, people afraid to come out), but the study/survey was over five years ago if I remember correctly. Maybe it has improved since then. This is definitely a concern. Can any current students comment?

UF seems great academically and it has nice scholarships for National Merit.

With UF being so large, you will see a mix. Most are not afraid to come out, if thats what they want to do. Everyone, not just LGBT people, will find their niche when they come here. Whether it be through student group/organization, greek, or through people they meet in the dorms or wherever.

^ I disagree UF is an internationally acclaimed Research University and not a community college. Besides most Florida residents are transplants.

The U.S. Census is alot better reference point in my opinion.

Yes, so if most Florida residents are transplants, then the FL Census will mirror that as well. The fact is SSobick, that you are using the statistic that will look better at UF, not the most accurate one.

Also, what does “Internationally Acclaimed Research University” vs a “community college” has to do with the student’s demographics? Both Berkeley and UNC are “Internationally Acclaimed Research Universities”, but like UF they are a PUBLIC state-supported University. As such, they all have to take in the majority of their STUDENTS from their respective state. This does not alter their research prowess, because the university is free to attract top level professrs from any state or country.
