Must there be a "point" to the college essay?

Yesterday I wrote my first college application essay for the Common Application, picking the "Topic of your own choice" option. Since I am passionate about nature, I wrote about the time that my family went to see the Grand Canyon. I think it is written well, with some humor, and I showed that I really enjoyed the experience. So my question is: Do I need to include a moral to story, or show how this event "progressed me as a person"? I could easily just say that before I went to the Grand Canyon, I didn't care about the environment nearly as much as I do now.. or something on those lines. But I've cared about the environment long before that experience, and I would rather not make stuff up. So do you guys think I should change my essay, or just keep it how it is? If you think I should change it, a suggestion would be nice. Thanks!

I think you should stick with the topic because you seem to be interested in it. Unless you’re an excellent liar, I wouldn’t recommend going that route. I would definitely include a moral to the story. Try to incorporate your experience with something that has to do with the school you are applying to. For instance, you can include that by trying something new, you realized that you loved it and u want to attend their university and try something new? idk just a thought.
