Hello!

I really like GW and I hopefully will attend next fall; however, I was wondering if I should stay at Foggy Bottom or MVC? I plan on majoring in Chemistry w/ a Pre-Med Track and I am coming from a private school with about 600 kids in the high school so living on a city-campus like Foggy Bottom will be a new thing for me! However, I don't know if I want to commute to Foggy Bottom for all of my classes. So this is basically what I am asking:

Is it a terrible commute from MVC to Foggy Bottom?
Are Freshmen classes held at MVC?
Are Science/Math classes held at MVC?
Which Dorms in Foggy Bottom offer me a good social scene but also enough quiet time so I can study?
Which Dorms in MVC has a good social scene but also enough quiet time to study?
And my final questions has to do with the fact that I'm choosing between Rice and GW...Why did you attend GW? Is it a good school for Pre-Med/STEM careers? Are there internships and research opportunities for Pre-Med students? How is the financial aid?

Thank you so much for your help!

Commute: The commute isn’t too bad. Just recognize that you’ll be spending a lot of your time going back and forth. I’m currently a freshman living on the Vern and towards this time of year the Vex becomes fairly annoying. You really have to be good about giving yourself enough time to get to your classes. I tend to give myself 20 minutes - 15 minutes to get down to Foggy and then 5 minutes to walk to my class and it usually works.

Are Freshmen classes held at MVC? Yes. All UW’s are held on the Vern as well as some other classes.

Are Science/Math classes held at MVC? Yes. There are a few Chem lab sections that are held on the Vern each semester (and possibly other sciences?)

Which Dorms in Foggy Bottom offer me a good social scene but also enough quiet time so I can study? Probably any dorm other than Thurston if you’re planning on studying in your room. Personally, I have a hard time working in my room so I usually end up at the library if I want to study.

Which Dorms in MVC has a good social scene but also enough quiet time to study? Probably West. It’s the biggest dorm on the Vern plus there are study rooms in the basement.

I chose GW because the engineering school seemed to have a very encouraging environment and it was really far away from where I live so it would be a new experience for me. I really like the engineering school so far (I’m doing systems engineering and computer science) and I know plenty of people who are doing Pre-Med as well as Chemistry and they all enjoy it. Considering GW has a hospital, I’d say there are pretty good internship and research opportunities for you. Also, I know of Biomedical Engineering students who have interned for the FDA and have gotten a lot out of it. For most of my friends attending GW, it was one of their cheapest choices. The people who need financial aid will generally get it.

@spoonster How hard is it to talk with and to get help with Professors? Are most classes taught by Professors or TA’s? How are the class sizes? And is it hard to get to classes while it’s snowing (I’m from the South so snow is scary! haha)? Again, thank you so much for your help!

How hard is it to talk with and to get help with Professors?
Most of the professors are very approachable and helpful if you need more help outside of class. And if you don’t like your professor, you’ll most likely have a TA you can talk to. All of my professors so far have been very helpful whenever I need help with something.

Are most classes taught by Professors or TA’s? For most of your classes, you’ll have one big lecture which is taught by the professor and then you’ll have a lab or recitation which will be taught by a TA. In my experience, TA’s are typically college students although for Chemistry and Physics the TA’s are upperclassmen who have succeeded in the class before.

How are the class sizes?
Lots of the general classes you’ll be taking your first couple years will be fairly big. I think my biggest class thus far has been 80 students. This is only for the lecture though. The labs will be much smaller consisting of maybe 20 students.

As for the snow, it’s not a big pain. DC is usually fairly prepared for the snow so they salt the sidewalks.

If you are a student who is attending the Elliot school, would you suggest living in MV or Foggy Bottom?

Just because you’re in the Elliott school doesn’t mean you’ll have all your classes there. That being said, the Vex has 2 stops on the Foggy Bottom campus: The first is at the Red Cross which is a block away from the Elliott school and the other drops you off at Funger which is more central. So it really just depends on if you’re willing to commute to campus everyday.
