my-3-sons or 1tcm...question

You have both been so much help, I hope you can help with 1 more question (ok, maybe more than 1..lol). What bank(s) are on campus? Did you open accounts with a bank on campus or use one closer to home? If you did use a bank on campus, did you do it during orientation week or were you able to do it online or by mail before? Now that my D has decided on Miami, I'm trying to make a list of things to do/know. Thanks once again.

I saw Bank of America ATM's on campus during open house...

I think it's the Bank of America as well.. Saw it on the website the other day..

Congrats on the decision! Things really get exciting now.

Yes, there are a BofA ATMs on campus, I think at the Wellness Center and UC, and a full service branch on Rt 1 just past the Holiday Inn. We set up S's account thru them during orientation. There is also the Credit Union, with ATMs on campus, thru which the kids can set up accts. We chose the BofA so we could deposit $ into his acct from a branch here, but waited to open the acct during orientation so he could have his UM address on the acct and checks. He has an acct with ATM card here in NH, but the bank is more regional. We just thought that it would be easier for him to have local rather than out of state checks and a full service branch where he could physically go speak to someone if there was a problem like a lost wallet. I was a worrywort and kept picturing him 1500 miles away without a dime in his pocket. A plus for the BofA acct that older students pointed out to us is that if at some point the student moves off campus, the only ATMs they can use without a fee are on campus, whereas there are BofAs all over the area.

During orientation, there is an area in the UC that is set up with all the banking info and representatives to help you set up the accts. It was a very easy process and took all of 10 minutes.

Thank you, that was exactly the info I was looking for. I want to set it up for her on campus, but obviously didn't want to have to wait in line with 2000 other people. I'm glad you told me it was easy, one less thing to worry about.
My D won't be 18 until Dec of freshman year, do you know if I would have to open a joint acct or would they allow her to have her own?

Congrats yankee girl on daughters decision! I wonder what happened to Wachovia--they used to have an ATM on campus?

CB also chose BOA. BOA has on-line banking services which are free and very convenient as well. BOA has a student checking account which is free if the parents have an account. If they open a savings account as well, they can sign-up for overdraft protection by tying the two accounts as well. This can be pretty nice, especially in S. FL, where nsf-checks have very high fees. And ....well....sometimes kids are kids....:) I see that m3s had a much quicker time signing up than son did at UC during orientation. If you have a BOA close to home, I'd get it done prior to orientation. Just one more thing you can check off your to do list.

I went back and took a look at some of the older threads, which gave ideas and thoughts about freshman moving in, and other ideas you might find helpful....I hope this helps....and as always....any other questions just ask. (This will probably be my last summer on this board, I'm thinking it's about time to pass the torch to some of you! :) )

Hey Yankee...one more UM parent here.
Another vote for BoA: we set up the account before heading down to FL, just to get it done. She also was 17 when she started, so yes, we have a joint account. She deposits her paychecks from an on-campus job right into the ATM @ the UC - never had any problems with that.
She has twice  lost her ATM card (she's learning...) and gotten it replaced with no problem.

Unfortunately we don't have any of those banks here in colorado except some B of A ATM's scattered around which for some bizarre reason won't take deposits. I was hoping to make this easy to fund spending money to S at Miami. Oh well.

One good thing, he's had his own checking account and ATM card since he was 13 years old so is an old hand at maintaining that kind of account. I had felt it was important for him to learn that kind of money moanagement early on.

jdm....you can actually go on-line to BOA's homepage and open and manage accounts with them, without ever stepping foot in the actual bank, if that makes it easier for you.

Yes, but I was hoping to have a branch of whatever bank nearby to make it easy to deposit money into the account and what not. Oh well, use snail mail I guess for deposits.

LOL.......been there....done that. There are no BOA's in Illinois within 300 miles of where we used to live, but I found that I can basically do anything necessary to our/and sons account over the net. I even had it set up to do transfers from my account to his; however, he can't transfer from mine....LOL I have used snail mail as well, the problem with that comes into play in deciding which "processing" center gets your deposit. When you sign up....make sure you ask the BOA representative exactly "where" you should mail deposits to make sure they are posted correctly and quickly. HTH!
