My 5-Week Journey to National Merit!

Okay! Hey guys I'm going to start my own progress thread because for the heck of it! I never seem to be organized so I guess the only way I can is to post my goals on the internet! Haha!

Anyway, Sept 10. The beginning of my 5 (or 6.. Not sure) week journey to my goal- National Merit

Goal:
Finish Writing section and check it!
Finish Critical Reading section and check it also.

I guess I'm taking it slow now.. But the reason is I don't want to overwork and kill myself (you know). Currently I'm ranging around 200-210 so I'm pretty close to my destination! So I guess now I do is basically focus on my weak points and go with the flow (sounds totally hipster.. But whatever!)

Help me out CC! This time I'll make sure to update it everyday! Promise! :)

Good luck with it!

thank you 5am6996!

Overview of Sept 10.

I signed up for the PSAT today at school! Will be taking it on Wed. Oct 17. SO WISH ME LUCK GUYS!!

Today’s goals of what I had in mind was achieved. I only got THREE wrong on the grammar section. I don’t know whether it was just an easy test, or I am improving. I hope it’s the latter because I’d be ****ed how happy I am and then be downgraded into like a 6 wrong…

CR was also okay. I did a section from BB. I got only 2 wrong, which I’m happy. I kinda feel that BB is too easy because almost all the questions are medium/easy. There was only 1 question that was hard in my section! What the heck! But yeah, will be checking that over tonight.

Tomorrow is another day! Which means more grammar prep and critical reading. I don’t think I’ll focus on math since math is my best subject ;p. But CR and W are killers for me! Definitely will try to read silverturtle’s writing guide again if I score bad. Otherwise… Just more grammma!

I hate grammar. How about you?

Sincerely
kimmylouie.

p.s. if anyone wants to post his/her progress on this thread, it’s fine with me  I’d love to help!

I didn’t realize the PSATs were so soon. Thanks for this thread!!

I should’ve studied more during the summer. :(

No problem FromNorCal!!

Okay Sept 11.

First off, it’s 9/11. RIP all the innocent people who lost their lives. <3

Okay goals for today:
-Complete another grammar section
-Complete another CR section
-Check both of them
-Start reading direct hits

It’s almost test day (5 weeks…) and I’m super scared! I hope I can complete all this today because I need national merit!

Good luck! My son read Direct Hits this summer and actually enjoyed reading both books. Some of the words have shown up on the BB practice tests…

you should check to see national merit scholarships psat scores per state since you have to beat out the applicants there to usually be recommended. Hopefully you don’t live in one of the super high scoring states where averages are over 213. good luck on your journey

My state is around 210-214. I aiming for 215 just to be on the safe side!

is it too intrusive to ask you what state you live in? I’m just wondering since national merit is calculated by the top students in your own state.

It is pretty intrusive ;p. But if you want to know your state cutoff, here is a website:

[National Merit Scholarships](http://www.collegeplanningsimplified.com/NationalMerit.html)

September 11

Goals were all met. I completed all the work EARLY. Meaning chillax time for me! :P. Anyway I only got TWO wrong on my grammar section, which makes me a very happy girl! I don’t know what I did for that 15 point jump! But whatever I did, let’s keep that score up! For critical reading, I did sub-par. 5 wrong. 2 on SC and 2 on Short Passage (from now on, I’ll simplify that to just SP) and 1 on Long Passage (from now on, I’ll simplify that to just LP). I truly think my weakness was vocab. So many times I got tripped up by some word, which made me lose focus and BAM fail.

I’ve decided not to start direct hits yet. It’s just that at school I’m memorizing a set of vocab and if I try to remember another set… my… brain… might… explode.

Proud of myself! I calculated my score and compared on the charts. I would have gotten 75! Go me!

Ha. How are you guys PSAT prep going? I hope you are getting AWESOME results!

Sincerely
kimmylouie

Sept 12 GOALS!

-Complete another Grammar Section
-Complete another CR section
-Check them over
-(AND IF STILL HAVE TIME) complete another grammar section

Sept 12.

I did horrible today! I think I might have burned out or something because I scored 5 wrong. I haven’t reviewed yet because I’m just trying to relax now. CR was pretty good. Only 3 wrong! I hope I can refreshen up my writing skills and come out stronger. I think what I’ll do tomorrow is focus on math and reading and ignore writing in general. Just for a little R & R. :)

Sincerely
kimmylouie

AHHH! PSAT IS NOW EXACTLY 5 WEEKS AWAY AND THE CLOCK IS TICKING!

Take a deep breath.

Haha! I definitely will cbw123! Thanks :)

Sept 13. GOALS!
-Complete math section
-Complete one reading section
-GO OVER

Oh right. I totally forgot about the PSAT. I have to take that this yeaarrrrrr… o3o

I had studied for the SAT over summer vacation, but I’m getting busier and so I decided I’d sign up for the December SAT and not overwhelm myself with study and work.

… I’ll have to (re)start studying so that I can have a chance at becoming National Merit Finalist and get scholarships. Yay!

Thank goodness I live in a state with an insanely low qualifying score hehe. I’ll probably just take one SAT every Sunday until October and then hope for the best.

Sept 13.

Just finished everything I planned for today. I got so many wrong on the math on stupid mistakes. I probably should have checked it over, rather than texting my friend about my crush (#teenageproblems). But anyway, CR was pretty good. Only 2 wrong. It’s probably because I did those questions in the past and they are still pretty fresh in my mind. Tomorrow I hope I can regain some confidence in my grammar and be able to check all of my errors. The last few minutes before I go to bed, I think I’ll type up my grammar problems. Yeah.

p.s. I think I might take a PSAT practice test. For the heck of it this weekend. Wish me poopin’ luck!

Sincerely
kimmylouie

Sept 15.

Sorry for no update yesterday! I went to a football game and I kinda got so hyped up I forgot to study.

Anyway I just finished taking my PSAT practice test (not the legit one, but from previous years) and while halfway thru, I realized that I took the exact same test from two weeks ago… HA! ■■■■■■■■ right?? Well I got 2 wrong on CR, 1 wrong on M, and 1 wrong on W. So I guess at least I learned from my mistakes! My in total score is 236. So it’s pretty dang good! :)

So taking an already-taken test, I guess today I’ll start studying some more Math, since I’ve been making quite a lot of stupid mistakes! So goals for today:

-Complete Math Section
-Go over wrong answers
-Complete CR section

I might go shopping later… So I might update later too! But for now. Bye! Good luck studying!

-kimmylouie

Sept 16.

Goals:
Complete Math section
Complete CR section
Go over all wrong.

Later.

I’m clocking in at around 209… aiming for 220. Connecticut sucks, but at least it’s not Mass. Good luck!
