My Absolute Last Post--Final List!

So I'm definitely not the typical CCer. Maybe this will be interesting.

Me: White female in suburban Kansas college town, competitive public school.

ACT: 28, but will retake. 35 Eng, 19 math, 33 reading, 25 sci.

Schedule: Honors classes in English whenever possible, but my school doesn't offer many. Only 2 ap's, though my school offers a lot. Lots of independent study, but not a lot of blow off classes. Senior schedule is probably most difficult of all four years.

GPA: About 2.5... Semester gpa will be higher than usual next semester, but cumulative won't change much.

Activities: School newspaper, 10-12. Copy editor senior year.
Junior Classical League, 11-12 (didn't exist until junior year). PR manager grade 11, possibly president grade 12.
Young Democrats, 10-12. Active, but no leadership positions.
KAY Board Member, 9.
Rodeo Club member, 9. (Why even put this on an app?)

Circumstaces: This is the important part because I didn't do this poorly for no reason. I come from a low-income home, parents divorced. My mom is mentally ill, in and out of the hospital a lot, which means I'm shuffled from my mom's to my dad's a lot. My close friend committed suicide second semester during my freshman year (I had a reasonable 3.3 before then). I found out during my junior year that I have ADHD; now I take medication and receive accomodations.

Major(s): Definitely journalism. Maybe classics or anthropology as well.

Schools: U Kentucky
Indiana U
Oklahoma State
Louisiana State
Arizona State
Colorado State
U Mississippi
West Virginia U
U Missouri
U Kansas (guaranteed admission with a 21 ACT)

Questions:
1. How much do you think I can improve my ACT score?
2. Should I take the SAT also?
3. How do I explain my circumstances without making it sound like a ridiculous sob story?
4. Should I submit supplementary materials? If so, what?
5. And obviously, what are my chances at those schools?

not much

if those are the only schools you're applying to, no

write about how you've been strong thru the process and how you've dealed

you're being very realistic. finally, somebody who doesn't want/need to go to the ivies.

You could probably get into some slightly higher quality schools with a 28.

Hey, don't leave, if you leave there will be nobody left to defend the honor of KU...and with you gone, I'll have no proof that I'm actually NOT the only college-bound student from Kansas...

As far as your schools go, they look like a pretty good list to me. Especially with an upward trend in grades as you finish the first half of senior year, and with that 28 ACT, you should definitely be in at most of those schools. I also think you could definitely consider some higher quality schools, as A2Wolves6 suggested.

With your writing ability, combined with the fact that you've dealt with and persevered through more life-changing experiences in high school than most people do in an entire decade, I'm sure you can produce a knockout essay that'll get you into quite a few quality schools.

Slightly higher schools...anyone have suggestions? As you can tell, I like big schools in the suburbs with strong party scenes.

Oh, and I'll always defend the honor of KU. Beak em.

I like the big schools too. Maybe a school like Rutgers, Georgia, Maryland, or Florida would be good. I'd say Texas (good party school, big campus, suburb), but I just checked and 91% of their admits were from in-state, so it will be near impossible to get in there.

all i have to say for lionswim is this

thank god for people like you...because you are honest and arent expecting harvard or yale...and the world need more people like you...

i wish you the best of luck in all things...school and non academic

Chrisnoo, that was a really nice thing to say. I actually get some bad reception around here sometimes because I'm not trying to get into highly selective schools. People seem to think that if you screw up, you're just not college material. Boo.

Texas (NOT Harvard) is my dream school, but it's not going to happen. Ever.

Even Georgia, Maryland and Florida are surprisingly selective. I don't think I meet even minimum requirements for consideration. As you can kind of tell, my gpa holds me back a lot. And Rutgers is in New Jersey... :-/

I have an interest in Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, and Baylor but I'm not sure they're right for me. They might be too conservative, they're definitely too expensive, and two of them don't have a classics program. But I haven't given up on them yet. Anyone have an opinion on my chances there?

^^THAT is by far the most beautiful list of colleges I've seen on this website :D

Ok, luckycharms, I've been mulling over what you might possibly mean by that comment, and I still don't know.

Are you a troll?

I think you could probably get into Indiana--and there's a HUGE party scene there, as well as lots of Greek life. I know many people going to or at IU, some for journalism, and they all seem to like it a lot.

And with Mizzou, if you explain the extenuating circumstances, I would think that you could be admitted as well.

ADD isn't an excuse for poor grades, don't use it as such. However the thing about parents and freinds are good explainations of why you did poorly, but not ADD.

Well, I honestly don't know how I would fit all of those issues into one essay. Something would probably have to go. But the ADD? That counts as a learning disability. It changes everything. My entire life I thought I was retarded and then with some medicine and accomodations I'm suddenly on the smarter end of average. It's not magic, but it's huge.

I may or may not mention it on my application, but don't minimize it. You're lucky to be normal.
