Looking for some help. A friend of mine is frustrated because although a teacher says they have sent a recommendation twice, the "My Andover" application still reports non-recepit. With the deadline of Jan 15 fast approaching, she has called the admissions office twice and they tell her they still have bins of mail to sort thru.

Any advice on how to handle? Just wait and take a chance that the "lost" rec will be found?

I recommend no action at this time. As long as the teacher has a copy of the recommendation which can be sent in again (if the current one is lost in the mail) there shouldn’t be a problem. It takes a long time to sort through all of the pieces of mail that was sent by all of the applicants. They will notify the applicant if there are missing parts of the application.

If the applicant intends to be a boarding student, Andover’s application deadline is February 1st, in which case they still have plenty of time. For commuting students, the deadline is January 15th, but if the teacher says they sent it twice then it’s probably still in the huge pile of unopened mail. I’d suggest waiting another week or so before you get seriously anxious.

My son’s applications had missing pieces on line until a week or two after the application deadlines. I emailed one school about it last year…if I had to do it again, I’d just sit tight and not risk irritating overtaxed AO staff.

That said, I do think schools should send an email to applicants letting them know what to expect in terms of wait (Groton did last year)–unlike the admissions offices, most applicant families have only been through this process once and don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes.

my friend reports that all has caught up and receipt has been posted electronically. Admissions staff must be putting in overtime. :)
