My apartment stinks

Literally. I moved into a new apartment and it stinks like ****. Anybody have any ideas to get rid of this stench without using things like potpourii or incense? Something to deaden the smell rather than mask it.

Coffee grounds are supposed to be really good for absorbing odour.

Febreze perhaps?

Oust fans are great. Candles work too.

sawdust or frebreeze

Go to home depot they have this powder that you'd pour on things like carpets and stuff. When I moved into my house the previous owners kept a german shepard in their basement for 4-5 years. My parents bought this powder stuff (no, it's not baking soda...) fromm home depot that after a couple applications it really did the job well.

The Bad Air Sponge (<a href="http://www.pureair.com/Products/Bad_Air_Sponge/bad_air_sponge.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.pureair.com/Products/Bad_Air_Sponge/bad_air_sponge.html</a>) works pretty well, look for it at home improvement stores or you can order it online. It won't get tough odors out of carpets, but it does a good job at getting the air to be breatheable. My family has used it a lot through painting the house, replacing carpets, finishing furniture, etc and were really happy with how well it worked.

SOmething that could be causing the smell is mold...if you air the place out and use the different methods and it still smells, have it checked for mold, which can be smelly and dangerous

Often, airing it will do wonders-open every window all day and night

Did they repaint it or recarpet it?

Also, how clean was it? Check behind fridge, etc. Something could have died and is still there

Are there curtains? Was there a smoker in there before you?

Put baking soda in bowls everywhere, it can absorb odors

::Something could have died and is still there::

Hahaha. Treasure hunting.

Yeah, earlier this morning I laid out some coffee grounds and baking soda. If that doesn't work I'll have to use some of these other things. I don't think it's anything dead in there, I think maybe the previous owner just had an unpleasant odor. But I'm going to reclean all the countertops and carpets and behind the fridge and, especially, the bathroom. I'm afraid to know what the tenants before me did.
