Hi! I applied for Studio Art and was rejected, I feel like it was because of My portfolio...I thought that might happen but I thought I would get in for Psychology. I plan on appealing undeclared

GPA UW: 4.0 W: 4.3 (Validictorian)
ACT: 29
SAT: (That they got) 1760 (That I took in Jan) 1830
SAT II: US Hist: 630 Lit: 650
EC's: Drama Club (Lead Role), Art Club, Service Club, French Club, Library Tutor..etc.

Yeah, any tips would be great! Thanks a bunch!

Tip - Save the time of writing an appeal, it will not work. For an appeal, you must submit NEW AND COMPELLING EVIDENCE. A 70 point increase from a very poor SAT score to a lackluster one is not compelling.

i second GrassBandit. definitely try. if it helps, a friend of mine appealed through the marching band at UCLA- and another one through some community service group and they both got in. so maybe you might want to do that? drama maybe? also, try getting recommendation letters from any UCLA professor/group you might have worked with- if not, your school teachers. again, would it work? no one can be too sure- but it doesn’t hurt to try, right? i have to agree with binks though. your SAT is definitely what’s pulling you down. but definitely try! :)

Sorry if I didn’t make this clear but this wasn’t asking whether or not to appeal, it was asking how exactly I should appeal. Several of my school teachers, and counselors told me I should appeal.

I understand my SAT is what was pulling me down, but isn’t my ACT right at UCLA’s average?

Also, how long should the appeal be? I’m guessing as short as possible.

I believe it is the test scores- the average scores that are listed are the middle 50%. The UCs look mostly at grades and test scores, while ECs, essays, clubs, etc. are more influential than prime factors. As for the new and compelling information, basically your change of major, class rank, and leadership roles in the clubs will have to draw them. I don’t know much about the process, but good luck! Also remember there were about 57,000 applicants!

sagemiomo, do you know if you can actually appeal as a different major for sure? i called admissions and they said due to over enrollment you can’t change your major when you’re appealing…

My roommate got in with a 19 ACT… anything is possible.

However, a change of major is definitely not the basis for an appeal. If you simply write about your SAT and changing your major, you are in my opinion (obviously shared by many here) sure of a second denial.

Well I got accepted to Berkeley if that helps. I plan on only mentioning my sat and underclared status. Like I said before the Reason I think I was rejected was my Portfolio, because LA apparently accepts 1600’s with great portfolio’s. I might try explaining that my parents wouldn’t let me practice my artwork as much as I wanted becuase they wanted me to study instead, which is exactly where I ended up.

Haha valedictorian…yeah I’ve been spelling it wrong all year. That would be awesome if they stole my speech because I couldn’t spell it right.

Anyways, I’m working on my appeal, and feeling pretty good about it! If I don’t get in, oh well! I’ll just be happy in cal. I keep forgetting how lucky I am to be in this position.
