Thanks

Nobody seems to know the answer to this question

yeah, i tried calling Berkeley today to get a real answer and unfortuntely they have something against humans answering the phone. All I got was recording after recording after recording!

call between 1pm-4pm PST. the number should be 510-642-3175. i've always been able to speak to an admission officer promptly and if you're in the area you can always drop by the office of undergrad admissions and talk to them in person.

i say this on no authority whatsoever, however, absolutely not. they don't care. they just care that you have 3 years in the same language with C- or better.

i did call that number and today between 1-4 and i got a busy signal every time.

i believe you have to press a number for the admission officer and then they put you in line and every like 30 seconds they tell you what place your in line.

jeez.
yeah, seriously there seems to be no straight answer cause no one really knows.
i do believe they dont care, unless you finished 3 years with a C.
So make sure you check that off, where it says so.

But what i did was put "B/A" in that little grade box.
EX:
[French III] -- [French III]--- [S]-- [5]--[B/A]--- [Warren High School]--- [04'-05']

and one the bottom of the website i just explained what that "B/A' meant.
which is that B was from the first semester and the A from the second hence "B/A."

hope this help in some way.

PEACE!

Also, if you do choose to the language blank and ask yourself, "how would they know if I completed my foreign language from high school?" Well by the time you complete the classes for your IGETC requirement; your community college is gonna ask for your high school transcript to prove that you have completed that "language other than English" section. From there, you will be IGETC certified, and your college will notified Berkeley and the other UC's that you have for sure completed all of your requirements along with your foreign language from high school.

Relating to this subject, do you guys know by any chance if i need to finish my for lang req? I took 2 semesters of spanish in hs 1a and 1b. But i never completed 2, so does that mean i need to take a semester of spanish 2 @ my cc, in order to fulfill the req?

^^^ talk to your counselors since they're the ones that are going to be certifying the igetc. I answered my berkeley app the same way wafflesmasher did.

i better not have to take spanish ever again (took 3 in hs)

I'm so confused. IGETC requires 2 years....If I finish IGETC, I don't need to do 3 years for the berkeley l and s right?

yes, it says 2 years for IGETC...:)

From what I understand, you only need 2 semesters of a foreign language for IGETC. I completed 2 semesters of spanish and thats it. I received an A for the first semester and an A+ the second semester. Why are people saying that Berkeley requires 3 semesters when IGETC requires only 2?? I am so confused...help??

I took 2 semesters of spanish and that will hopefully satisfy the need. It will apparently work for IGETC. All I know though is that these two semesters solidified my hatred of spanish. BTW, I got an A and a B.

Actually you need 4 semesters of a foreign language if you're using classes from high school since 2 years = 4 semesters.

Oh well. I'll take two semesters of lit translation too.

From http://www.smc.edu/catalog/2007_2008/033_catalog_part_1.htm:

The Foreign Language requirement for IGETC may be met in one of the following ways:

Completion of high school coursework equivalent to 2 years of the same language with a grade of C (2.0) (C- is calculated as a C) or higher in the last semester of the second year. EXCEPTION: If a grade lower than a C (2.0) is earned in the second year, second semester, a grade of C (2.0) or higher in a higher level course will satisfy the requirement.

A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam in languages other than English.

A score of 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Exam in languages other than English.

Satisfactory completion of 2 or more years of formal schooling at the 6th grade level or higher in an institution where the language of instruction is not English.

Completion of a course(s) at a college or university with a grade of C (2.0) or higher (any course, excluding conversation courses, considered by the college to be equivalent to 2 years of high school language may be used)

Satisfactory score on the SAT II: Subject Test in languages other than English

Language other than English O level exam with grade of A, B, or C.

My college is on the semester system and I only needed ONE foreign language course to fulfill the IGETC requirement. Some of my friends who are on the quarter system needed to take two courses...

As always, you should check YOUR college's catalog for its requirements.
