My Best Friend Was Just Accepted to Harvard

The reason why athletes are given likely letters is because Harvard (and the Ivies in general) doesn’t recruit, athletes wouldn’t find out for certain if they got into a school or not until late March, early April. This proves problematic for athletes because oftentimes they are considering offers from other schools that do recruit and do offer scholarships, and the deadlines for letting these schools know if they are attending that school or not is a lot earlier than Ivy decisions. The likely letter is not just preferential treatment towards athletes, but a way for them to make a good decision about where they are going to be the next couple years of their lives.

^ Great job of addressing the likely letter situation.

He’s also very strong academically: a well-rounded person, so to speak.

Just to put things into context, he has a 2270 SAT, he’s taking two of the highest Math levels in our school, and he and I have had some very interesting heart-to-hearts about everything from girls to fluid mechanics. Now, in most cases, the athletes that get recruited from our school aren’t always the strongest academically (They’re definitely the strongest in their sport, though), but he’s an all around good guy.

Bilguun was the recipient of an academic likely letter.

lol I’m confused. I thought Harvard did away with early admissions? Do some people who apply early still get a decision early?

No, official admission date is still around 4/1 for everyone. Some applicants, generally athletes, are provided with ‘likely letters’, that give an early assurance that they will be admitted. This is practice throughout the Ivy League and the rationale behind it is described well in avshockeyw’s post #21.

On the Yale forum, I put up this primer about “Likely Letters”

Question CBatch…

Do you know what your friend’s accomplishments in crew were; like erg scores, competitions, etc.?
