Ok, so I’ve revently(this year) kind of discovered that I wanted to go into Investment banking, I know it really random, but ya, the problem with that is that all the clubs, volunteering, and activities revolve around medicine (i.e, hospital work, HOSA, im a a medical magnet program). The only buisness realated thing I’ve done is starting my own dog walking buisness(haha…laugh), and worked at an HMO, other than that…nothing really. I don’t really know if it will hurt me whne applying to Wharton, I just think they might be a lil confused that I was so medical focused an now I’m applying to Wharton.

ps, i wanted to be a doctor for awhile, still have the passion for it though, we’ll see though

you sound a lot like me. I used to go into phases where I wanted to do business, then medicine. That's when I discovered that I could do both. Many schools offer MD/MBA dual degree programs, where you would go to 4 years for your MD then a year for your MBA(instead of 2). I'm specifically looking at Penn Med and Wharton MBA for this program. A large number of MD/MBA students choose to concentrate in healthcare administration for the MBA, however you can choose whichever concentration you want(depending on which school you apply though). I'm interested in healthcare management, investment banking/finance, and marketing, so once I get more experience in business, I'll be able to narrow down my interests.

So, for you, I would apply to Wharton for the healthcare management concentration(i do believe they have that for undergrad), showing your interest in the operation of healthcare systems. It seems as if your ECs would reflect that. Remember as well that you don't necessarily need business ECs to get into Wharton. My friend that's a freshman at Wharton didn't have ANY ECs related to business. You just need to show leadership and continued interest.

Also remember that there's an interschool minor in healthcare management and biological basis of behavior. So, there are many options to consider. If you need any help(i've researched Penn as a whole, Wharton, Penn Med, MD/MBA programs, etc), feel free to PM me. Penn students should also be able to give you first hand info as well.

JasonHoya gave some really good advice. im just posting to say im in the same boat as you guys, with the business/medicine interests.

I've done the same things Jason's suggested, and I'd strongly encourage looking into MD/MBA programs. And don't worry about your EC's, you're more than fine!

Thanks so much guys; Makes me feel more confident when I hear people like you after reading the posts like, "How to make your Wharton App stand out". I've consider the MD/MBA programs, but I feel that if I do end up going to one of these programs I will obviously end up becoming a doctor (8 yrs of school for NOTHING medicine related, c'mon). I've also considers health-management and I had no idea Wharton had a program like that, thanks! I'm a junior, do you think I could do anything now do still capture the admissions(my SAT's aren't fabulous..)?
