My CC is BETTER than yours!

Is there a California community college rankings list somewhere?

I've heard some talk on the board of certain community colleges having higher transfer rates than others. Is this the result of a community college having a greater percentage of good students/professors, universities having a preference for certain community colleges, or a combination of both?

Here you go oorah87. This website has tables for transfer pathways. It's pretty simple to use, but if you have any questions feel free to ask me.

California Postsecondary Education Commission -- Transfer Pathways

It looks like the college with most students who transfered into a UC program is Santa Monica College. 981 students in 2006.

hmmmm.... does this mean that universities have a preference for certain community colleges then? If that's the case... things don't look too good.. my cc is in the green for LA...

thanks guys. woah! gotta love UCLA for their stats!

phew! my cc has a higher admit rate than our rival for UCLA!

Edit: thedude44 where did your link go??

the thing is, my CCC has a LOT of CSUN transfers. but these kids either totally sucked at school or wanted to become accountants. I know SMC kicks my CCC's ass at transfers to UC's, but that's because they have more people that WANT to transfer to UC's.

I took a few classes at SMC and I must say, I am not impressed. They seem about as daft as the next smoking joe.

oh, what do ya know. my school is not under Los Angeles City College but under Pierce College (weird). We've got a lot of UCLA and CSUN transfers. UCSB is a close second. basically more and more, every year.

I don't think the universities give a preference to a certain CCC. I think that those in the blue schools probably have a larger student body and maybe also more dedicated students. I think schools in the green are still good.

In the end, I think the UCs will look at individual stats and not what school you come from.

Oorah87 - what link are you talking about from thedude44?

Yes, Santa Monica Community College transfers more students to UCs, but that's because SMC has more students to transfer...if you look at the PERCENTAGE of students that they transfer, they are NOT number 1...in fact, LA Valley College (my CCC) transfers more people to UCLA if you look at how many people transfer in relation to how many students attend the CCC.

Keep in mine schools like SMC have more students than most community colleges and the student population at SMC is more likely to apply to UCLA than most other community colleges. If you look at more than sheer numbers from SMC and compare the actual percentage of students who transfer to UCLA a lot CCCs are on par with SMC and there are several that are higher.

there it is! SMC does have a pretty high rate though. almost 49% !!!

yeah, if you've seen SMC parking, you'll realize that they have more students than most CCC's. why do they keep selling parking passes when they know they don't have enough space?? it drove me nuts.

pierce has a 51.16% acceptance rate. based on that, LAPC is the place to be, lol.

I thinking parking is a problem at every big CC...

Another thing to keep in mind - the numbers presented are the number of people who actually transferred, not merely those who were accepted. It seems that proximity plays a role here, as many of the southern california schools have a lower matriculation rate for schools up north, and vice versa.

Yea SMC is high and a great place to go if you want to transfer to UCLA. However many schools are at 44-49% which is really not that big of a difference and El Camino College is at 50%.

I'm assuming that has to do with the fact that most students who transfer have the inclination to stick close to home.

at pierce, the only real concern is affording the parking pass. we have a huuuuge lot and actual car size space to park it in. lol, i paid more for a SMC parking pass than I paid for one class I took one fall. +$70 for the parking pass.

Yea definitely agree. I believe there are a lot less students that live up north and apply to UCLA and a lot less students that live down south apply to Berkeley.

lol, sorry if i come off all harsh about SMC. it's just that my best friend goes there and always gives me grief, telling me that LAPC is for losers and SMC is for the "serious" students.

bah. we'll see when the acceptance letters come out....

I am an avid SMC basher. I went there for a little while and really did not like it.

Is it true that some CC's offer more online courses than others? I've heard some really iffy stuff about LACC...

I also hated going to SMC. lol
