Hooks:
I'm not sure if this is hook, but my great grandpa went here.

Great grandfather is a bit too far removed. Legacy is usually parents, siblings and sometimes grandparents. Your hook, if you will, is being Native American; that’s a URM, while Asian is not.
You don’t need anyone on this board to tell you that your SAT math score is great, while your CR leaves something to be desired.
The 3.4 GPA is unimpressive by NU standards, and your ECs, while varied, are fine but certainly not overwhelming.
I think NU is a reach; but for the Native American hook, I’d say it’s a high reach.
Good luck.

When you say part Native American are you saying that one parent is a full blooded indian and a member of a particular tribe. If so that is a very big hook indeed, and with a 1450 M+V SAT you will be admitted to many top 12 schools

Thank You for your comments, SAY and WCASParent!!!
I really needed a third opinion!!!

You didn’t answer my question. If on the other hand you are 1/16th and your parents have mainstream jobs it will count for very little.

I am 1/8 Hawaiian and my mom is a small business owner

If you’re only like 1/16th Native American, IMO it would be disingenuous to claim that as part of your race and get an admissions boost, especially if you’ve lived a privileged life.

hmmm like I said before I’m 1/8 Native American and I don’t get what privileged life has ANYTHING to do with it.

Well, Hawaiian, Native American and Native Hawaiian are three different things. Hawaiian could be of any race. Native American =|= Native Hawaiian. If you’ve lived a privileged life, you don’t deserve a boost. The boost is there only for people who experienced hardships in life that could account for the lower stats. I’m not saying you’ve lived a privileged life-- that’s more of a question. What Asian ethnicity are you?

Wait, so if I am privileged, I can’t say I am part Native Hawaiian even though I am?

I’m not trying to anger you I really am curious

Well, you can and should if you really are that. You just might not get much of a boost, if at all. Just like when rich blacks apply, and the school can tell they’re rich, they really aren’t given a boost because they’re just like all the other privileged applicants. A poor white on the other hand might get more of a boost.

What do you mean if “I really am that”?

If you are Native Hawaiian and privileged, you won’t get much of a boost. If you’re Native Hawaiian and poor, you most likely will.

I agree with all the posters about how things should be but that’s not really the way it is. Very few of the African-Americans or Hispanics that get admitted to top schools are truly poor. The majority are middle or upper middle class students and 40% of the black students at the Ivies are not Americans at all. But 1/8th Hawaiian and the rest Asian is not likely to provide much of a boost at most schools.

I’m not looking for a boost :P

I just want to tell the truth…

The chances are very good that you will be admitted to multiple top 20 schools. I would include in your application essay something about your mulitcultural family which is truthful but shows your more diverse background. You will still get significant geographic points coming from Hawaii. Moreover don’t discount your perfect M SAT. I bet there are only a couple of such students from HI like that each year. I would suggest retaking the SAT and using a review course to raise the V score to 700. With a M+V 1500 you will get many admissions especially if you are willing to go ED.

Sorry I remember now that you live in CA but advice remains the same. Find places in the application to discuss your Native Hawiian Culture and let’s hope you don’t have a common Asian last name.
