I don’t know if your ECs are strong enough…

It really bothers me when posters on CC say someone’s EC’s are weak. What are high school students expected to do? Its already hard enough to maintain a GPA over 4.0, play a varsity sport, and do community service.

I’d be nice if posters like sammielue21 would specify in what way ECs are weak instead of just pointlessly hurting an applicant’s confidence.

I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone’s confidence and belive me, I know how difficult it is to have “strong ECs.” The fact is, though, that people like aoh591 and myself are being pitted against Olympic athletes, Nationally Recognized scholars, founders of three clubs, etc. So when someone asks for their chances, I’m going to be honest.

I didn’t claim to be sure, and I didn’t elaborate. Maybe I should have, but I didn’t. I was in no way saying that he wasn’t an excellent student, person, etc. Simply that when put in perspective, his ECs aren’t stellar and would be the weak point of his application.

strange…since I got deferred from Duke, and the reason for that was not my EC’s, which the admissions officer said were great, but my grades (I think he expects me to get straight A’s while taking the hardest courses offered in my school)

Weird. The application process is a total crap shoot; no one can honestly predict anyone’s chances.

And aoh591 – sorry if I offended you, I truely didn’t mean to.

None taken. Don’t worry about it.

Ya I was ****ed about Duke…Right now I’m getting an A in everything except for AP BC Calc and AP Physics, which are the 2 hardest courses our school offers. I think I can get an A in Physics (A+ after one test) but for Calc… not so sure. And right now I’m not sure of my Poli Sci class either, considering our teacher has started to toughen up and I bombed a recent quiz (77…oh my!!)

Psshh. 77 is nothing – I got a 65 on a recent Physics test.

Oh my Chemistry sophomore year, 1st term. We had 4 tests: I had a 65 and a 67 on the first two, a 72 on the third, and an 83 on the last. We had an error analysis type of thing that can raise a test grade up to a 70 (which I did for the first 2 tests). Somehow, I pulled out a B- for the term.

I was proud of myself

sorry sammielue21, my post was harsher than I’d intended. I just feel CC posters get a bit carried away, especially in replying to Chances threads and I would hate to think it affected anyone’s confidence in applying to a certain school.

Sounds rough, aoh591 – I’m glad you pulled off a B- though. =)

And BigAl – I completely understand. I didn’t think before posting, and I probably should have elaborated. I would hate for someone to bash my hopes of getting into my dream school (as far-fetched as they may be.)
