My Chance at UCLA..?

Mods can you change my title to My chance at UCLA haha thanks

Hey guys, I'm a current High School Junior aiming at UCLA to be my #1 choice school. I'm also trying to get into San Diego and Davis also as they're easier than LA and I may not get into LA. I come from a school (IN CALIFORNIA) where there are 3000+ students in a not wealthy neighborhood, but probably the lower middle class to middle class.

My classes/grades:

9th grade:
Algebra 2 A/A
Art 1 A/A
Physics A/A
PE 1 A/A
Drivers ED/Computer A/A
English 1A (not honors just accelerated my school doesn't have honors) A/A

10th Grade:
Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry A/A
Biology A/A
English 2 A/A
AP World History B/C (Brought GPA down ALOT..)
Spanish 1 A/A
Electronics 1 (Elective) A/A

11th Grade: (Currently, no grades yet)
Spanish 2
Photography 1
AP Calculus AB
AP English Language/Composition
Chemistry
U.S History

12th Grade: (The Plan)
Spanish 3
P.E 2
AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature
Government/Econ (Maybe AP..?)
Last class maybe something like Psychology or something maybe Photography 2

My extra cirriculars:
Track and Field (will be) all 4 Years
Water Polo 1 Year
Interact Club (I plan on getting 150 hours total)
American Red Cross 4 Years
French Club 2 years w/ 50 community hours (I am a board member)

About SAT's (1) I honestly don't know where to start, but I am starting studying this week out of SAT books. I scored only a 1500 on my PSAT, but that was totally raw, as I did not study or anything for it. I plan on a 2000, but I know a friend who got into LA and Berkeley with only a 1950..?

And SAT 2 I read that UC will not require them for the graduating class of 2012 (High School) so I'm not planning on taking it, but if recommended (as in it would help me get in) I plan on taking the Math one, and probably 1 MAYBE 2 more if I can find a subject that I'm good at.

As for my major, I don't know what I'd like to be yet. I'm considering architecture, business, economics, maybe premed or something if I feel that I am smart enough, but I prefer business as I have a mind for making money since I am into math and my family has a business background.

Please take your time to read through all this stuff as I'd really like to know what I can do to increase my chances at UCLA and if you think I can get in or not. I don't even know when to start applying honestly. I am very motivated, but at the same time can be very lazy.

Thank you very much CC!

Your friend was rather lucky. Unless you’re an URM, I wouldn’t bank on making UCLA or Berkeley with a 1950. Nothing is for certain.

A 1500 on the SAT is dangerously low… even for a cold turkey raw first try. People usually don’t jump more than 200 to 300 points and those are the individuals that have been very ambitious. Plenty of students never make an improvement at all.

You still have a chance but you need to realize where you stand. Unless you can get that 2000, you’re fighting a very uphill battle.

Yeah dawg. LA will be a bit hard to get into without at least a 2k. Although sometimes I do survey around friends and have heard of lower scores such as 1880s get in? But then again, you need to work on your GPA and what not as well. SAT is only like half the battle.

San Diego MIGHT even be a little hard to get into unless you study your butt off for those SATs.

Davis should be a good-to-go school though!

ok um thanks for replying guys is there anyone else that would like to give their opinions? I’d really appreciate your help… WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE MY CHANCES AT UCLA???

Write amazing essays for the application. And yeah study atudy for the SATs!!! I had a 1650 to begin with (raw, no joke my score was so low that I almost decided not to even try for LA and Berkeley) and took the SATs twice. First time 2010, second time 2190, both in October, apparently when the curve sucks the most (actually I have no idea on that one, I just know that my friend who took it in November got a 800 in writing with a 9 on the essay portion…) anyhow, I have seen plenty of people improve dramatically over the years, it just depends on how hard you try. Getting to 2000 isn’t as hard as getting past that. Just know that you need to practice really really hard! Good luck :)

you won’t have that much “change” at ucla after you pay tuition, books, and living.

Yeah i meant to write chance… my bad uh anyone else that can help me?

If you are not a great standardized test taker, options become limited. Your GPA looks great at first glance, but not good upon closer inspection. The only truily rigorous course you’ve taken has yielded a B/C. which is worse in reality than C/B, if you think about the cumulative effect of June grades v. January grades. On the positive side, you got an A/A in Precalculus, a course that derails (is almost designed to do that) many straight A students.

You’ll know much better whether you are a fit for each of the four tiers of UC: UCR/UCSC, UCD/UCI/UCSB, UCSD, or UCLA/UCB after you get your two AP grades this January and then June.

Not much for you to do now other than to do whatever it takes to change whatever led to the B/C your got in AP World to an A/A, or at least B/B, in AP English. Even consider seeing a Tutor for a few sessions… perhaps your method of approach is poor.

oh, last thing. Don’t be so set on the “image” of UCLA. Everyone has a college that is a good fit for them. For some, the worst thing that can happen is to get in by the skin of their teeth, and then compete in class every day with 85% of the class that is better at standardized testing and in-class tests than they are. That’s a tough hill to climb and wears down and discourages many.

I will keep this short and simple. I am applying this november. I finished all 6 honor classes for TAP. Using my gpa for fall applications, I will be submitting a gpa of 3.84. I am a science major and the three majors I wish to get into are: biochemistry, neuroscience, or biology. In terms of my EC, I have volunteered at Orangewood Children’s Shelter, Pomona Homeless Shelter, and I am still working in the hospital for some experience. HOWEVER, by the time spring comes around, I will only finish CHEM 51, meaning i won’t have one semester of organic chemistry. But I completed all my math requirements as well as biology, and general physics. The only thing that is worrying me is the fact that I won’t be able to finish even ONE semester of organic chemistry…which really doesn’t make sense to even take one semester of organic chemistry at a cc in spring 2011…I have been at cc for 3 years now…due to science classes being filled up rapidly. Chance me please

did you mean to make a new thread…?

You have a good chance! Just write a really good essay! I got accepted to ucla with a 1900 and am starting in 1 week!

dont listen to all these CCers, ppl with 1950’s are accepted a lot. I have heard people as low as 1750 getting in (with really good EC’s). Point is, anything is possible, the most weight is on your essays. Obviously a better score gives you a better shot but anything above 1800 gives you a shot

What do you guys mean by writing good essasy? Is that the one where I answer 2 questions and write less than 240 (or was it 400) words?

Actually, the most weight in on your GPA
