hi everyone...cornell is my dream school and i would like to see how big of a chance do i have to get in...

desired major: mechanical engineering
GPA: 3.5 (i know...not the best. but I am in the top 15 out of 200+ students and I am extremely strong in math...have a 100+ overall average in math.)
SAT: reading: 380 (english is not my first language)
math: 640
writing: 510
total: 1530 (i know this is horrible...but i am taking SAT classes and i will take two more SATs.)
taking SAT II's in November for Math lv. 2, physics, and chinese.
APs: took calc AB sophomore year, which only 6 people in my graduating class was able to do. score: 5
took calc BC junior year, score: 5
currently taking AP stats and physics B (C is not offered in my school...i would've enrolled in it if it was.)
can get 5 recommendations regardless from 3 math teachers (2 APs), physics/ AP physics teacher and a social studies teacher that's a cornell alumni, which is currently the assistant principle at my school.

Extra Curricular:
Anime Club (freshman year)
Robotics (junior and senior year)
teacher assistant for my 9th grade math teacher's algebra class (sophomore year)
might join a community service committee this year

i know somebody who graduated from my school in 2011, he applied to cornell with a 185x SAT score, did several ECs, got a below 90 overall average, and he got into cornell. but he is extremely good at math...he was the first person ever in our school to get a 5 on both calc AB and BC. i know he had amazing recommendations...that's why i am going for it. thanks guys!

try the act. in my opinion its english and reading sections dont require you to be as proficient in english as the sat’s cr and writing sections do.

With your current SAT score, you have no chance. Also, your ECs are below average. Your rank makes up for your lackluster GPA a bit. The main point is that you need to get that SAT score wayyyyyyyyy up.

You have a shot but Cornell is definitely a reach for you right now. You better get all A’s in your first semester of senior year! Good thing you are applying for engineering because math and science are definitely your stronger subjects. Your SAT is the main problem and I agree with the above poster that you should try the ACT. You and I are very similar. I am definitely a better math and science student and I did very well on the ACT so you should really try taking the next test. Also, write kick ass essays and make sure you get very good recommendations. You need them and they will definitely make up for your test scores if they are excellent. But if it is possible for you, apply ED for Cornell and get your application in ASAP. Take the ACT and SAT again ASAP as well so that you can get all your stuff in for the ED deadline. If you get deferred, send in a midyear report from school if you do well first semester. Good luck :)
