My chance

I'm applying to all the UC's this semester and I wanted to know what you guys thought my chances were.

I used to be pre-nursing, but due to my work load and extra curricular activities I didn't do to well and I have a 3.2 GPA and will get a 3.0-3.2 GPA this semester. I'm not going to make any excuses for my GPA the majority of my pre-nursing classes were Bs and I should have done better but I recently changed my major to Anthropology after I started doing Anthropology research this semester. I'm working with my Professor to fight for federal recognition for Mission Indians and by 2013 I will be a published co-author (he's writing a book and I'm helping him). It's through this research that I realized I would rather become a Professor and spend my time helping communities at risk than be a nurse (I can help more a larger group of people this way) and I believe that my extra curricular work show that.

I have done circle K and was president where I tripled membership, I tutor at risk children English and Writing (got As on my Writing and English classes), help immigrants with English speaking and writing, and am an active member of Jewish Voice for Peace fighting for Palestinian rights. I also work 36 hours a week on a ranch doing manual labor for $5 an hour as a girl (I'm undocumented and this was the only work I could get work) and spend half of my income on orphanages in Ethiopia and the other half on my clothes, bus passes, food and fencing fees. I also fence and am looking at doing it competitively in 6 months and I help out at a yoga place.

My GPA is low but I feel my personal story is moving enough especially as an Anthropology major. I fled Ethiopia when I was 6 after I was circumcised, I'm a girl, and I honestly believe that with an Anthropological background I can do a lot to change what is happening back home. My interests have always been going back home to start an NGO or social group and I believe as an Anthropologist I will have a better perspective of how to help people. I know I'm reaching for the stars but I was hoping you guys can help me figure this out. I'm looking at UCLA and UCSB, LA being my reach but I would be happy at UCSB and I was worried I might not get in. Sorry for this being long, hope you guys can help. Thanks.

Your story is really inspirational, and you’re an amazing person. I really hope UCLA or UCSB accepts you. You want to make a difference in the world with your career, and believe it or not, most people don’t have that objective in mind. I feel that maybe one of the UC’s might find your story amazing, but your GPA will definitely hurt you. I wish you the best of luck!

Your story and username are kind of polar opposites lol.
I wish you the best of luck though

Agree with California510 lol.
Put that in your application so let them know, it will definitely help you for UCLA since they look your personal statements.
You would probably get in UCSB

Are you a US citizen? If you are not I think that ALL schools will be a reach for you unfortunately. Only some of the UCs read your personal statement so since your grades aren’t great, UCSB might be a reach too. I think you’d have a good chance at UCM, especially because they read the personal statement.

If you are a resident and you will have all of your prereqs completed, I think you have a really good chance at UCSB, definitely UCI (again, they read the PS), and a good chance at UCLA too.
