Hi, I just finished the summer of my sophomore year in high school. My curent GPA is a 98%, and my rank is 3 out of 1080. I have taken one A.p. class (European History). Junior Year I will take Ap Biology, Ap Calculus BC, and Ap United States History. On my PSAT I received a 176 without and prior preparation, and the most recent practice SAT I have taken, I received a 2,000+. After a summer of preparation I am hoping to get a 2200+. I am a published poet, I am the president of the Young Writers Club in my school. I am an active member of both the national honor and service societies. I did research in a college over the summer of my freshmen year. I am going to do laboratory work in Sloan Kettering Hospital, a renowned Cancer Treatment Institute. I have volunteered as a Park Ranger, and at a medical office for over 300 hours. I wish to attend Columbia, and I want to know my honest chances of getting in. Also please let me know on things I can do, to increase my chances

Chances are fairly good. I’d say you have around a 65% chance, but you never know with the ivies.

Is there anything I can do to improve those chances?

Sounds good so far. Some of the things you could do to improve your chances…well its a bit early but closer to the time, give yourself plenty of time to write your essay. Try to get excellent recommendations from your teacher, leadership positions perhaps. Do extremely well on both SAT 1 and SAT2. Its kind of early for application tips so basically just continue to do the activities you love and do well in school. I think the sloan kettering thing and research is really good.

Thank you for taking the time to write this! Yeah I am planning on spending a long time writing my essay. And I wil take SAT II’s in the subjects where i took ap classes in: United States History and Biology.

better scores in what? I have not taken anything yet. My curreny SAT score is over 2200

I think you have a great chance! getting a perfect score on the SATIIs is a prerequisite, and make sure you score 5’s on your APs
you’ll be fine, i’ve seen people with less get in:)

two things: 1) nail the SATs (Reasoning and Subject tests) 2) participate in activities and go beyond your high school (i.e. debate, quiz teams, academic decathlon, etc.).

final note: ignore anyone who give you percentage chances without viewing your complete academic/extracurricular record AND your essays.

Thanks a lot for your help! I really appreciate it! And I ahve another question, would it look good if I learn Mandarin (from Rosetta Stone), becuase I speak Russian, Spanish, and Englihs already. So, I was wondering if learning another language would help.

probably not, i doubt you would gain fluency in such a difficult language in a matter of months

You said your PSAT was 176 and you have not yet taken the SAT. You seem like a nice kid, but you have to get your scores up. What did Columbia accept this year, 8% - 9%? Just keep working hard.

“Is there anything I can do to improve those chances?”

Apply early.

@ Supersize me- Yeah I will! Thanks!

@ Glido- I have not taken the official SAT yet, however I have taken practices. And I have 6 months left prior to my first SAT. I am going to spend the time studying, and trying to get my score to 2200-2380 range.

Well if you rally want to go to Columbia, I would suggest on applying ED (or EA I don’t remember). that being said, your ECs are a little bit weak. Your test scores are fine, and you’re taking a good number of APs. you need to get 5s on your exams though, to indicate to colelges that you attend a good school. Other than that, write a good essay and get good recommendations. With ED, I’d say your chances at Columbia are at about 75%. Good luck.

Thanks for the chance

Also I forgot to mention some details: senior year I will take:

AP Physics B
AP Statistics
AP Government and Economics
Ap English

My current high school is highly competitive, and also I am taking the maximum number of ap classes we are allowed to take. My other classes are all honors.

I have much more ec activities, but I only bothered to mention the most important ones.

Ap Government
Ap Economics **

Also for those who do not understand the number grades a 98% is a 4.0/4.0 GPA … And as far as Standardized Test Scores, I have not yet taken the SAT… I am trying to ain for as high as possible, pelase do not take account my psat socre, becuas that was in the start of 10th grade, wuthout any prior preperation. Thank you!
