I've always seen NYU as a longshot, but now that I'm actually starting to apply to schools I want to see how big of a longshot it actually is, haha.

Here's my stats as of the end of junior year:
28 ACT
3.8 cumulative GPA (unweighted, 26th in class)
2 on the AP Chem test :/
ECs: NHS (3 yrs), Pit Orch (1 yr for sure), Varsity Band (3 yrs), GSA (4 yrs, I'll be President this year), also will be a Band Officer
Around 30 hrs of volunteer work

Also, I meet all of NYU's recommendations for credits except for science, I have 3 1/2 credits. I'll have 4 credits of foreign lang. by the time I graduate.

I'm taking AP English Lit and AP Psych as a senior, also.

Here's the question about Dramatic Writing. If I don't get accepted to Tisch, do I have to reapply to major in, say, Journalism?

Also, does anyone have an idea of how competitive that program is (Dramatic Writing)?

Hihi! I’m probably the only Dramatic Writer here, so allow me to answer every single question. :D

For chances, I think you have a decent shot. Remember, academics are only half of your application. The portfolio is very important. If your portfolio doesn’t impress the faculty, they won’t even look at your ACT scores. My GPA was the same as yours (and I got a 2 on the AP Chem test, too! Only mine wasn’t on my application, I took it this year). I did better on my test scores, though. Your ACT is on the low end of NYU’s average scores, and if I were you I would take it again in September or October.

Anyone in Tisch can double major in anything they want in CAS (which includes journalism) without reapplying. So don’t worry. Also, a journalism major requires you to double major in something else, so it shouldn’t be undoable.

At the open house I went to before I applied, the dean of dramatic writing said that you have a 1 in 7 chance of getting into the major. There are about 40 people in each class, and they accept about 20 transfers a year. Then again, I was accepted, so I don’t believe that figure.

I was only able to apply to DW… there was no way to reapply or choose a second major if I didn’t get that. But I can tell you DW doesn’t refer any students to LSP if they don’t get in-- it’s acceptance or rejection only. And journalism may be an equally good major. Think about it carefully before you commit to an arts major.

I don’t know how competitive the program is, I never went to the open house. I’ve seen the mailbox where they put the portfolios for ED and RD and it definitely piled up a few times around Winter. I think there are like 50 to 60 kids in the program per year, but it’s hard to tell because the transfers mesh with other higher year courses right away, while the freshman only take the normal freshman courses.
