My Chances? and UTD or UT?

Well for the past couple of months I have been pretty sure(95%) that I would get in. I live in Houston, and go to a pretty competitive High School(Clear Lake, if any of you know), I need some reaffirmation since I have been offered a 44 grand(total) scholarship from UTD, but I really don't know what I want to do anymore. I am a lifetime Longhorn and will be a fan no matter what, but this is a lot of money. I was hoping you guys could give me an idea of my chances at the School of Engineering, and whether or not I should pick UTD over UT for Electrical Engineering.

32 ACT(35 math, 33 Science, 30 Writing, 29 Reading)
790 Math
590 Reading

GPA
4.32 Weighted

AP Calc AB- 3
AP Comp Sci- 4
AP Stats- 4
AP Physics B-Pending
AP Econ- Pending
AP Calc BC- Pending
AP Government - Pending

105/787 rank

God I hate my school.

wow. a 4.32 and not even in the top 100...
your test scores are really good id hope you get into ut but i cant say for sure.
i go to brazoswood and our grades are just as inflated so i know how you feel. some of my good friends have gpas in the high 90s and prob wont get into ut.

Just curious why you are asking? Is there some deadline that is approaching for a decision or action?

We went to UTD and took a tour, then read Studentreviews online - and DS decided not to apply. He had scores for a lot of money from UTD (top 2%, 800 math, chem, etc) and we are by no means rich - but the whole "college experience" that he is looking for just isn't there at UTD. For some students, it would be a great choice. I think older students with a full life outside of school would do well there, and definitely students who are most driven by financial concerns should consider it, but..... the apartment housing means kids are more isolated, there's not a sense of tradition, many students are commuters, no big sports, students are not happy with their education or experience according to student reviews. Campus is nice, but small. There's a great new science building, and lots of tech people there - but we decided it felt more like a trade school than a college. JMHO.

Oh wow. Yeah, my family is upper middle class, but we aren't rich either. They can afford to send me to UT, but the money is enticing none the less. But even so, UT is and has always been my dream school. And I wanted to be a part of that tradition. I want to get a good education, but I also want to do intramural sports, and I want the whole life instead of just the constant studying.

Thanks a lot for your opinion. My friend told me the whole other end of the spectrum when he visited. I have about 3 of my friends def going there, and they are all really smart. At this point, I have to decide what is more important...

Aghh I hate it.

I live about 15 minutes away from UTD and it's a pretty crappy place to go for the college experience. I'm a HS senior also. Most of my friends who go there that got into other places (UT, SMU, baylor, A&M, out of state places) said they HATE UTD. They opened for undergrads like 15 years ago I think, and they have made some damn good progress since then (engineering, management, neuroscience I think are their strong points) but the humanities are terrible there. The housing is decent but there won't be many parties or anything. There's not much sense of community going on. Usually the people will stick to their own race or stay with the people they knew from HS or childhood. It's mainly a commuter school, and it's in Richardson (a suburb of Dallas). Going to Dallas would be like a 20-30 min drive away I'm guessing. You should look at applying to Collegium V Honors if you're seriously considering UTD.

You will get a great education for engineering no doubt, but you might not enjoy your 4 years there. If finances aren't a huge concern, I would take UT over UTD any day. I was accepted to UTD with full ride, but will still probably go to UT or out of state.

If you wana know anything else let me know

Yeah I really am looking forward to meeting a lot of new people, and I see how it could be hindered by sticking to people you know, especially at a school like UTD. I know a lot of people at UT who love it, but nobody at UTD. TBH the only reason I am considering it is because of the money. If there was not a full ride, it wouldn't even be a choice. I see their test scores are higher, and have a smarter student population which might translate to a better edu. maybe, but UT is UT and well thats pretty much the argument in my head.

And although this shouldn't be a deciding factor, I have a feeling the chicks will be 10x hotter at UT. From what I have seen from visiting my sister(who is 10 years older than me and went to UT), this holds true.

So have you visited UTD at all? I was planning to visit, but find my self becoming to lazy.. knowing that even if it is a nice place, it still isn't Austin, and it still isn't UT. Plus the admissions rep seemed desperate almost. I know that is was very interpersonal and all, but for a college of that size, he remembered my name, which was kind of weird.

Any more information you can spit out would be very helpful to me. Thanks!

My school's the same way. We have like 20 people with a perfect 4.5. I have a 4.0 and I'm ranked 100 out of 700.

foxshow

I've been to UTD many times. It's basically a bunch of concrete buildings everywhere. Not much in terms of beauty. The suburb is your average upper-middle class suburb.
If you do go to UTD, I would urge you to get away to Dallas during the weekends whenever you can. There's some good clubs (Purgatory being the best one I think), music venues, and also amazing professional sports teams. The city of Dallas is great, but UTD sucks.

All in all, from my extremely biased POV, I would urge you to go to UT if your family can handle it financially.

Many people, including a couple who went to utd, have told me to not go there. I even knew a girl who turned down a free ride+more there for ut austin and she didnt regret it. so if you can afford ut austin, go there.

what a twisted world we live in. people won't go to utd because its not good, but it can't get good until people go there.
anyways, i recommend austin just cuz i know ppl who go there and who like it. also it has awesome programs. i never even considered utd.

Well ours is quite a bit worse. We have something like 40 4.5's, and a 4.0 isn't even top 25%. Which really sucks, since I would be at least top 10% at every other school in my district solely on gpa, and probably top 5% if I took my courses there.

Thanks for all the opinions, this has definitely shed some new light on my thinking about UTD. For a while there I was actually 60/40 with UTD and UT respectively because of the money. But now I think I am 25/75. Now I just need to get in :).

Oh to the earlier question, I am just trying to figure out what I want to do. I am not in a hurry right now, but I would like some sort of an idea of what I want to do before I rush into anything.
