Hey guys! I'm kind of new to CC, but I was wondering if you could give me some advice on which boarding schools would be suited to me best. (I posted in the main section, but this place is probably more appropriate) I will list my stats:

Grades
- 8th, straight A's
- 9th, don't have them yet, though I'm taking all honors classes and skipping a grade for both math and French

EC's
- Crew, 10 hrs/wk, currently a novice
- Dance, (ballet, modern, jazz) 6 hrs/wk, pretty high levels
- Speech and Debate, 4 hrs/wk, won various awards
- Volunteer Work, 4 hrs/wk (summer- 10 hrs/wk)

SSAT's- 98% from last year (8th grade)

So this is basically all I have right now. From looking at all the stats postings on this forum, I sometimes feel a bit intimidated by these extraordinary people that apply. Do I have a shot at the top tier schools such as Andover, Deerfield, and SPS? What schools should I look at, based on my interests (crew, dance, and speech)? Also, should I contact the crew coaches at the schools about rowing there? Will they show any interest to a novice rower? Is it harder to get in applying as a 9th grader? Thank you guys so much! :)

I’m also applying for 10th grade at a boarding school and I heard that it was similar to applying for 9th grade because they still have lots of spots.

Don’t be intimidated by other people. Most of them are all overachievers and sometimes sugar coat their stats.

Your stats look really good with your 98% SSAT. Just make sure you keep up the grades in 9th grade to have a chance. Also, make sure you write a good essay, connect with your interviewer and get excellent recommendations.

You definatley have a good chance. Contact the school’s coachs, it helps to have someone at the school you’re applying to who knows you. I really don’t think that you’re a novice but I could be wrong.

Well, what was your overall grade average in 8th; low A, mid A, or high A?
Second of all, you should add Model UN to your list of EC’s, but I say that because I think it’s so much better than debate.

Really though, you’re perfect. You have great EC’s, as you have sports, art, academic, and community service. They love well rounded students. Then, straight A’s are a good thing to have as well as all honors. Don’t let yourself slip next year. Instead, look at it as your year to have the easiest high school experience you will. Knowing it’ll be easier than boarding school, you should get good grades when you can, and therefore try your hardest. SSAT’s don’t matter that much, but with a 98% you’ve really maxed them out.
It’s not harder to get in as a 9th grader, in fact, in some schools it’s easier. It all depends on the school. I applied this year in 9th grade and I’m going to Andover.

Even with all of this, there is still a chance of failure. If you don’t nail your interviews and essay, your chances, in my opinion, will decrease by 20-40%. Be ready, learn about the school beforehand and have questions on your mind that can’t be answered by the school’s website. REALLY elaborate on every question they ask you so you can tie in all of the good things about you into the question.

With your statistics, you’re going to get into top schools like Andover, Deerfield, SPS, and Exeter.

Thanks so much guys! For SoontoBoard: My A’s were mostly high ones, a couple mid A’s, but (oddly) I never got an A- in 8th grade. Also, my school offers Envirothon, Science, and Math teams, but no Model UN. I think that I might try Envirothon, it seems fun and challenging.

In addition, I started crew in the summer. Is it necessary to contact the coaches? I am very dedicated to it though, and I will also be rowing 10 hrs/wk during the school year. Thanks!

well a good tip on writing essays/ the interview is to remember to make yourself standout!!! it could be a weird passion like making stuff out of duct tape, or cooking Iranian cuisine, but if it’s interesting and sets you apart it really helps!

haha. Not just four on CC. Quite a few people I know are applying for sophmore year, and a lot more then I expected compared to the percentage I know that are applying for freshmen year.

I only applied to A/E-- 99% SSAT, strong academically, sports, pres of class, female, etc. waitlisted at both. My advise is to contact everyone re: sports, ec’s. Keep a dialog and sell yourself. After application we learned alot of people apply to several (10??) schools.
On 7/1 I got THE call from Andover & I accepted
I will be a new lower (10th grade) Class of 2012.
