What are my chances at Bryn Mawr?

SAT: 2000
GPA: (this is really complicated because my overall GPA is a weighted 4.0 but that is because I did so poorly my freshman year of high school and I significantly improved)

I go to a fairly bad high school. (Only the valedictorians usually go to Ivy Leagues. Everyone else is off to Rutgers, for the most part.) Then again, a lot of people consider my high school to be really good. Its in NJ, so its a bit more competitive than schools in the Mid-West, etc. Still, its really small and no one has ever gotten into a Harvard, Yale, or Princeton.

My rank is 20/200.

I’m also a very accomplished musician. (Violinist) I play at the precollege division of the Manhattan School of Music which is a prestigious conservatory. Also I spent the summer before my junior year of high school in Armenia for one month, volunteering in an orphanage. I am also one of the editors (I’m not the main editor, however) of my school newspaper. I am in Poets and Writers club. I am in varsity-debate. I am in mock-trial. And I’m on my school’s cross country team (Varsity)

What are my chances?
I’m doing ED.

I think you are a definitely a competitive applicant for ED, stats wise. Your extracurriculars are strong, your rank is solid, and your SATs are pretty good as well. If you can really pour your heart and soul into the essay and distinctly convey why Bryn Mawr is your top choice, I think you stand a good chance.

Also, in regards to your GPA, when I interviewed there (interviews are wonderful if you can!) as a senior I actually asked my interviewer if it was “ok” that I had some Bs and one C on my freshman year report card. She actually laughed and said that the “perfectionist spirit” I displayed would be perfect for Bryn Mawr, and that as long as grades were going on an upward trend from first year I would be fine.

Definitely agree that BMC looks at things holistically and keeps things in perspective as far as one or two less than stellar grades. I had one or two C’s in math and science my junior year on my transcript (mainly due to teacher quality issues) and it didn’t seem to worry BMC as I came in with excellent grades in everything else that semester and as an intended humanities major/social sciences minor.

So I think your chances are pretty good, as long as you come with a really good essay and interest in the school.
