My Chances at Combined Programs

Hello All
I am a junior interested in applying to UMKC, George Washington, UIC GPPA, Brown PLME (regular decision), Case Western PPSP, and Kent State University's combined programs next year.

Here are a few stats:
2190 SAT (740 M + 740 CR + 710 W)

219 on PSAT (on borderline of national semifinalist; index was 218 for Illinois a year ago but goes up or down by two points each year)

B+/A- grades. I go to the Illinois Math and Science Academy, one of the best high schools in the nation and definitely the best in Illinois. They do not give GPAs nor class rank but my GPA would be a 3.5 ish. I realize this is on the low side, but I go to a competitive school and I hope colleges realize that.

Research at Loyola University Chicago in the summer before junior year, mentorship at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine during the school year. Plan to do a research project this summer and another mentorship at Feinberg next school year.

AP Chem this year, AP Calc BC and AP Physics next year. Expect a 4 on AP Chem exam; colleges will not know other APs until after decision.

SAT II Chem and SAT II Math Level II C in May and October. Expect >700 on both. I realize this isn't many APs or subject tests, but I skipped my freshman year of high school.

Taking the most challenging courses offered.

Volunteered at school nurse's office, music department, math department, and volunteered at local library and my doctor's office.

ECs:
Medical Ethics Club
International Doctors of Tomorrow
Mu ALpha THeta (Math honorary society)
WOrld Academy of Young Scientists
IMSA Math Team
Math Modeling Contest Participant
Advanced Computing Association Vice President (computer club)

So I have a wide range of interests, but I've done things that show I'm interested in the medical field. What do you guys think about my admission to each of those programs? THanks for reading all this and for all of your help!

Comon guys, any support here? Maybe if people who have been accepted to combined programs could post their stats, it'd be great.

I'd say you need to try to boost that SAT a little to make up for the gpa and try to do some more medical related volunteering just to show your interest in the medical field. If you could get a 5 on the AP chem, that would help greatly because the colleges would see your high science potential.

i am going to be blunt. that SAT and GPA are going to screw you over. im at imsa too and you probably know who i am. colleges don't care about imsa's caliber anymore. a 3.5 here is the same thing at a 3.5 anywhere else.

just some stats. this year many people applied to combined programs

for HPME nobody got an interview based on stats. this includes a 4.0, and 2350

PLME, nobody got in

there was one GPPA and i think he has above a 3.7 and good test scores

I got into lehigh/drexel and st. louis med scholars being the only one in the school (however, i know of people with a 34 act, ~3.6) who didn't make it.

its very difficult to get into these programs. your research wont do you any good unless you compete in siemens or intel and get recognition, and that in itself is hard too.

classes, though hard and AP status, aren't labeled ap. :</p>

oh, you better get more leadership positions to have a chance!

ok, that was difficult to say, but you have a summer and a semester! goodluck!

oh. do not apply for GW, the school is bad and expensive.

try rice/baylor and usc/keck which are rather difficult

you can try SLU medical scholars as well but stats are difficult as well (~1200 people applied, 80 accepted) normally 60 matriculate

l0vevik - I'd like to go through your post and comment on certain portions. Most of the things you say are true, but not all of them.

The SAT is fine - 740 M 740 CR is better than my 800 M 650 CR (which has gotten me into drexel/drexel)
Your GPA does need to improve substantially, because I agree with l0vevik that a 3.5 at one of the best schools in the country is much worse than a 3.75 at my POS public school in pittsburgh.

I believe that all of these programs are all CRAPSHOOTS.
Ex: I have a friend who got interviews at casewestern, rochester, PSU, etc, but no interview for drexel. I got an interview at drexel and no interview at any of those places.

I agree it is VERY difficult to get into these programs, and l0vevik mentioned some research, which I can't seem to find. If it is research related to science/healthcare, it WILL help regardless of how far you went in it. I researched with a PhD on cancer cells and I think it seriously helped me with college. I didn't publish, but any results that I got off my own procedures, I sent in to a couple places that would take them.

Leadership positions - not nearly as necessary as you would think. I am not the leader, president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, any of that stuff, for any of the (few) clubs that I'm in.

A couple of my own suggestions: get more medical ECs. Try and do something above and over just hospital volunteering (but make sure you do a bit of that as well), try to get involved in a local research center over this summer, or some sort of scientific enrichment program, etc. idk if illinois has governor's school, but that would be one of your best bets. I know NW runs programs during the summer, try and get into a healthcare/science affiliated one and attend it this summer to better your chances.

Your gpa would be much improved by a strong spring semestter, and even a strong fall semester as a senior. Don't let senioritis destroy you like it did me.

Ah, just saw the research and medical stuff. looks pretty good as of right now, but anything more you can do (even if it is hospital volunteering) will help. But, remember, colleges want quality, not quantity. I volunteered at a hospital for 14 hours. That's right, no typo, just 14 hours. I've seen people volunteering for over 1000 hours at a hospital, which I thought was out of control.

PM me if you have any more specific questions. I got into at least 1 of the programs I applied for, so now I'm ready to help people who are going to apply for the '08 programs.

That's it?!
