Florida ended racial preferences in college admissions today, giving Gov. Jeb Bush his first victory in a quest to abolish traditional affirmative action in the nation's fourth-most-populous state.

After hours of sometimes impassioned debate, the state Cabinet approved the education component of the One Florida Initiative, Mr. Bush's program that eliminates race as a criteria for college entry and ends set-asides in state contracting.

Under the plan, which was unveiled in November, affirmative action in academic admissions will be replaced by a plan that guarantees college admission to the top 20 percent of each high school's graduating class. The plan also calls for more money for financial aid, test and college preparation and advanced placement courses.

The plan has been criticized by blacks and civil rights leaders who said it could set the clock back for minorities on jobs and education.

I'd like to see the Common Data Set for the University of Miami. Anyone ever get to see them?

"let affirmative action work wonders for you!"

Guess it can't. FSU MBA Is on top of his game. Haha

Miami's average gpa is about a 4.1. The reason the gpa is so high is because Miami takes the gpa that is printed on the students transcript. So if a high school heavily weights then that adds to Miami's avg. gpa.

I personally love UMiami, and it is my #1 choice. It is by far the best school in the country, with UCSB a close second.

By far, yet! HYPS et.al. will be so relieved to learn this; now they can all go home ;)

Miami#1...in regards to what it is the number 2 best in florida behind Uflorida and far from being best in the country, first you have the ivies than you have schools like tufts, stanford, than you have nortre dame and dukes, than you have schools like bc than you have the highly sought after states like UCLA UCBerkley, Miami is no where near the top of the list in best academics. It is a good geographically located schools with alot of diversity, but so do many other cities.

So most people think i wil get in, and one person thinks i will not. But highly hopes I do

If anyone else wants to put any input feel free...but the deciding date is Feb. 14 lets hope i get in

"Miami is no where near the top of the list in best academics."

I don't pick my schools based soley on academics. I feel Miami is the best overall school in the country. No other school compares.

And you'll get into FSU.

"I don't pick my schools based soley on academics. I feel Miami is the best overall school in the country. No other school compares."

Thanks man, what do you base it on? Party's like i said before the location is perfect warm weather, nice girls, really nice campus, decent sports school

Im assuming you like schools near the beach because of UCSB...but Miami is 20min from south beach :)

bumppppppppp

Any word yet?

1000 out of 1600... you may want to retake, that's not reall good for anywhere. Most schools want you to at least hit a 1200.

I'm guessing he dind't get in, since we haven't heard anything yet.

FSU you are right, rejected thanks guys, they said it was because i did not have enough "lab" sciences

they offered me to go to some community college and take a summer course and than go in for fall but i need my summer so i probably wont do it

G-U-NOT, your GPA looks pretty good. It all really depends on what your scores are on the SAT and ACT. Another thing that FSU looks at, at least when I applied, it's your extracurricular activities. It helps if you're involved in clubs or sports. Other than that, you should get in.

The Realness, I'm very sorry to hear those news. You should do the summer thing, if you really want to go to FSU. On a side note, what you experienced proves that many people get into UM and not into FSU. FSU is a lot harder to get in than what most people think it is, especially all the "experts" on this thread that said you would get in. Hopefully you can get in as a transfer student or some other option. Good luck to you and don't give up.

OK.... Reallness. Miami is my first choice.. I have very similar stats to urs. 3.0 gpa and 1660 SAT. I Applied RD and im waiting for response. Do you know anything about their super high stats. 4.0 average gpa's and like 1250 average SATs. are they exagerating and scaring 3.0 borderline kids away or wat? wats the deal? cuz seeing ur case, just lightnened my day up :D!

^^acarta07...Miami takes the gpa printed on your transcripts, so if a school weights very heavily they could easily have 4.5 or 5.0 gpa Weighted. Miami is very competitive, but you definitely don't need a 4.1 to be the average applicant.
