My Chances at Getting Into Rice?

<p>So I'm really not sure about my first choice, Stanford (as in I really doubt my stats are strong enough), but do I have a good enough shot at Rice?</p>

<p>GPA: roughly 3.95 unweighted, 4.42 out of 4 weighted.</p>

<p>SAT: 2120 on my first try, taking it on my next opportunity and i should hopefully get a 2200+ (I got a 230 on the PSAT)</p>

<p>ACT: 33 composite, first try</p>

<p>Course Load: 10 APs for HS (6 as a senior), 5's on all AP tests</p>

<p>Rank: 6th out of roughly 350</p>

<p>Sports: No school sports, 3 seasons of basketball and 6 seasons of baseball (fall and spring) for rec leagues during HS (i doubt that even counts for anything but w/e)</p>

<p>ECs: 4 year member of Future Business Leaders of America (3 years as an officer and currently President)
2 year member of Key Club (1 yr officer)
1 year of Math Club
3 years of French Club
2 years of French Honors Society (1 as VP)
1 year of officer-at-large for Sr. Class Council
2 year member of National Honors Society</p>

<p>Community Service: not much currently (under 50 hrs), but should hopefully have 200+ by application deadlines (with Habitat for Humanity)</p>

<p>other factors: Not much, I'm from Virginia and I know over half of Rice's applicants are in-staters. I don't know if that hurts or helps, because there aren't many other applicants from VA for me to compete with, but for example, at a college like UNC-Chapel Hill it's easier for in-state students to get accepted and almost impossible for out-of-staters.
I was accepted into the prestigious Governor's Foreign Language Academy for Virginia, a 3-week full-immersion program for French (guess that might help?)</p>

<p>Major Interest: Civil Engineering or Business</p>

<p>Other School Interests: Stanford (already mentioned), UVA, Duke, Vanderbilt, University of Chicago, MIT, Princeton, Penn, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering</p>

<p>another thought: should I apply Early Decision to Rice? Obviously, it's binding, but Rice is currently my second choice anyway and my first choice, Stanford, is not at all a sure bet.</p>

<p>I would try Rice ED. Stanford would be very tough given average stats and no stand out ECs.</p>

<p>Hey, you sound like a really great applicant. Honestly, I think you are a shoe-in at Rice (despite the fact that you are an out-of-stater, which hurts a little in my opinion…). Honestly, I wouldn’t go for ED at Rice, because you don’t need to. </p>

<p>I think that you have a solid chance at Stanford because of your grades and activities. However, it’s always hard to predict for those top level schools. If I were you, I would go ED to Stanford, because your chances are that much higher, and it sounds like you would go there anyway.</p>

<p>Most likely acceptance at Rice.</p>

<p>Being OOS helps, they want more diversity, it’s not a state school.</p>

<p>I’d have to second RedRoses. Statistically, you’re way more likely to get into Rice than you are to Stanford. </p>

<p>If you’re fine with Rice as a school, I’d say ED to Rice, instead of EA-ing to Stanford.</p>
