my chances at MIT and CMU

Before we get to the STATS let me give a little history...
I am Hispanic... was in the special education program until the sixth grade (they took me out because I finally learned to read at an okay level). I had reading problems which seriously held me back (I barely made it out if the six grade). Now, I am an honor student with the following stats...keep in mind that I am still working on my reading and writing skills (in Spanish and English).

From the Bronx New York....

SAT: M 650 (very low), CR 580 (lower) , W 540 (no comment)......
SAT II: Physics 760, math Ic 650, US history 660

Rank: 9th in grad class of 745
GPA: 3.95 uw

Intended major: Materials Science and Engineering
Both interviews went well—especially MIT.

Model United Nations

Wall Street Club (one of two representatives from my school in this city wide club)

Member of Arista: National Honors Society (through this club I have participated in many community service activities)

Other stuff from that I can’t remember right now…..lol

Awards
High Honor Roll

Simons Fellow

Questbridge finalist (turned down full scholarship because it had an early decision commitment to the participating schools; this would have kept me from applying to MIT)
Other Stuff…

Oh…. I also have a couple of mathematical equations under my belt...the papers aren't finished yet, but from my research they are original. Some of the equations involve the Golden Ratio (phi [1.618]) which is a special number like pi). I sent copies of my equations and how I derived them to MIT and CMU.

Your background is absolutely amazing. I think you are good for CMU and MIT. Raise that SAT though!!

well, assuming the equations are groundbreaking ones in the mathematical world, i dont think everything else matters that much. but considering they are just derivations that anyone can do and easily produced, your sat's make it almost impossible to mit. also, you took world history for both frosh and soph?

They recently asked for my mid year report? I got this quote from an admissions person’s blog

“I should note that a mid-year grade report can't save an otherwise problematic application. We generally use them to confirm a decision (i.e. to make sure you're sustaining the work that led us to want to admit you in the first place)” (Ben Jones)

They ask for just about everyone's mid year report to make sure the same level of academic quality is being achieved.

please explain your ridiculously high math grades and your 650 on the SAT math

I couldn’t concentrate while taking the SAT and I got really nervous; I almost had a breakdown the first time I took it ...it scared the crap out of me...same goes for the SAT II (during the physics I had to stop and collect myself....this allowed me to do well on the that test...). This doesn’t happen while taking test in school. My final for AP Calc and AP physics were old AP test.. . I did very well ( calc 5 [90%], phy 5 [93 %]). I know that when I take the real test this year my nerves will get the best of me.

Oh you never got a chance to re-take the SATs? I know it's too late now but it could've REALLY helped you out.

Oh I forgot to mention that a kid from school got into MIT....his average is a little higher ...but he isn’t even in honors (he took his first AP classes this year). I have higher SAT Scores....I know that my Chances are low...but

their was nothin special about his essay...

he is a homosexual...and he put that in his application.

he did EA this fall

That's great?

not for me

in most cases affirmative action is the most preposterous idea i have ever come across (supposedly it includes homosexuals now)

Perhaps MIT likes your school?
I mean at my old public high school, the avg SAT was about 1200 or 1250. It was a good school but not that great as we had only about 5-10 people out of a class of 400 go to an Ivy league every year (no Harvard last year).

However, for some reason some colleges like Oberlin and University of Rochester really liked us as they accepted 2.8-3.0 uw gpa's but with high 1300-1400 SATs. Same with Umich and Cornell who really liked our school too.

Boston college didnt' like us though as they rejected even our 3.9's. Good luck but I still say your chances are low for MIT :)
