My Chances at MIT....oh i got into CMU

My Chances at MIT....oh i got into CMU

new opinions…please

Before we get to the STATS let me give a little history...
I am Hispanic... was in the special education program until the sixth grade (they took me out because I finally learned to read at an okay level). I had reading problems which seriously held me back (I barely made it out if the six grade). Now, I am an honor student with the following stats...keep in mind that I am still working on my reading and writing skills (in Spanish and English).

SAT: M 650 (very low), CR 580 (lower) , W 540 (no comment)......

SAT II: Physics 760, math Ic 650, US history 660

Rank: 9th in grad class of 745
GPA: 3.95
Intended major: Materials Science and Engineering

Wall Street Club (one of two representatives from my school in this city wide club)

Member of Arista: National Honors Society (through this club I have participated in many community service activities)

Attended College Courses in Chemistry (this kept me from many other activities like sports for awhile)

Other stuff from that I can’t remember right now…..lol

Awards
High Honor Roll

Simons Fellow

Questbridge finalist (turned down full scholarship because it had an early decision commitment to the participating schools; this would have kept me from applying to MIT)
Other Stuff…

I wouldn't count on getting into MIT.

Wow, you are crazy. You have reading problems and you still got so good in school? Unbelievable. Anyhow, seeing that you are so good at math, what don't you try to improve your math score.

I think you have a chance at MIT. Honestly. Your stats are great and you are challenginf yourself quite a lot. Keep on going dude!

wait...you got into CMU engineering? OMG.

I couldn’t concentrate while taking the SAT and I got really nervous; I almost had a breakdown the first time I took it ...it scared the crap out of me...same goes for the SAT II (during the physics I had to stop and collect myself....this allowed me to do well on the that test...). This doesn’t happen while taking test in school. My final for AP Calc and AP physics were old AP test.. . I did very well ( calc 5 [90%], phy 5 [93 %]). I know that when I take the real test this year my nerves will get the best of me.

okok, nvm. I remember who you are. =) sorry abt that message i send you.

okay, I see what you mean. The freakin test is so damn long. It scares the crap out of anyone! Including me. Although I got nervous and under-performed but did not underperform significantly. In your case...let's just say that you underperformed greatly.

Anyway, it doesn't hurt to take the test again does it? It's worth a try. And this time, really prepare and make sure you won't have a fit during the real test.

Best of luck to you.

phiandstuff!
I am more keen on "oh, i got into CMU" part as I have applied there. When and how you got to know this?-likely letter, phone call, website, email or snailmail?? I thought they release only third week of March and it is just start of second week.

You got into Carnegie Mellon which was a CONSIDERABLE reach. Don't push your luck. MIT has no problem rejecting applicants with perfect GPAs and SAT scores.

I found out about CMU from my interviewer…she works in admissions…she called me yesterday.

Sm97…You would know by now if you had gone to the Celebration Weekend and left an Impression

MIT.....it's going to be hard. But you don't want to be there anyways...I don't think I would want to go to school with a bunch of math/science nerds...(no offense to those who are math/science nerds or know them or are associated with them in any way, shape or form)

CMU is always looking for ethnic diversity.....If you are of color, hispanic, American Indian, and NOT asian, you have a great chance with lower SAT scores.....same for accepting women.

CMU loves Hispanics/Native Americans even more than the affamed minority (African Americans). I see roughly ten African Americans walking around campus for every individual of Latino descent.
Seeing as the numbers for African Americans are already pretty low... well.. you get the point.

I don't meant to sound harsh, but...

MIT doesn't accept people who have trouble reading...

yeah they do...

a kid from the international house at my school got in (EA)....he has a higher GPA but lower SAT score....He score 100 points lower then me in the CR section....He came from Mexico six years ago....He isn’t even in Honors (but does take AP...like AP Spanish).Bryan Nance (MIT rep) sent him a personal letter in which he tells him to work on his reading and writing skills…..he didn’t say that directly

what? How did you get in. Probably because of the GPA and the Simmons. Do you live in New York? Probably.

Congratulations, any way
