I am ranjodh Dhaliwal from a remote part of India.
What do u think my chances are at MIT:-(I have only applied at MIT,none other):-
1)I have done schooling only upto grade 10(MIT doesnt need all 12.).
2)Sat scores-maths level 1-700 and bilogy e-710.toefl scores:-expected 110/120.
3)Great at extra curriculars for dancing, quizzing, cyciling, singing, reading and projects.
4)Supercool recommendation letters.
5)1st runner up of all asia cabury bournvita quiz contest.
ask me any more info 4 my chances if u want to.thanks.
ranjodh.
pls help me and tell me my chances.

My interview was waived off as there wa no EC in my area.Remote part mean i a small town of Punjab.
Ranjodh
i dint give sat 1 as mit substitutes it for toefl and btw,my application never asked me in which grade i was.
ranjodh

dude
did u study in the CBSE (that counts for more than other streams) or in the state board???
What did you get in your 10th grade Boards?
have you actually won competitions, or volunteered somewhere?
i know you won't have a GPA, but MIT does require you to send your senior (that translates to 12th Std. in India) transcript. if you aren't doing your 12th, then what did you send them?

my school sent my 10th transcript.the word senior is not mentioned anywhere.i am studying in icse.i have actually won competitions and participated till a long way in high profile ones lie india's child genius(till pre-quarterfinals).i m still doing my 10th.

You have no chance.

^^^ I agree that you have virtually no chance, and I don't think it is all that bad to be rejected.
Study hard for the next two years, and apply after your 12th.

unless you have an extremely good reason as to why you stopped at 10th, and if you have an exceptional essay, your not going to get in. Finish 12th and apply.

In America, the thing to do would be to wait until 12th grade and apply during your Senior year. However, I do not know your circumstances in a small town in India. How old are you? You show a lot of promise, but I would apply to other schools in America and some of the IITs that I have heard about.

an honest observation that could help you in the long run: you speak very bad/broken english. maybe your toefl scores won't be as high as you thought. and i'm not so sure about your essay either.

hey ranjodh
what's your hurry for college anyway???
i didn't know the ICSE existed in 'remote' corners of India...you've enlightened me :-)

you've participated in some cool contests (which year were you the runner up in the BQC?)...

MIT definitely requires you to have done calculus in school and i'm sure that's not offered until 11th grade, so joining now is out of the question.

wait for a couple of years, it'll make you better prepared for college
(and i'm not too sure about ur TOEFL score - i suggest you take the SAT, no matter what your TOEFL scores are)
and, of course, IIT is an impossibility without 12th grade, and the IIT-JEE is way too tough for anyone to attempt at such a young age.

I agree with above. Your chances are almost nonexistent. Go through 12th grade and try hard on your SATs.

you should be studying instead of posting on forums like this

MIT doesn't really 'require' calculus, but they do recommend it. And they do say that more than half the freshman class places out of single-variable Calc, so 'recommended' is probably pretty close to 'everyone has it', yes.

That said, Ranjodh: I really suggest working till the 12th before you apply to college. It'll work out better for you in the long run -- you'll have a better chance of admission (as you'll be competing on a more even footing), you'll know a lot more and struggle far less with college-level work, and you won't ruin your prospects within India. (Not finishing your 12th exams in India is a seriously bad idea, considering how much they matter.) It's quite unlikely that MIT will take you now, but in two years' time you might have a chance, if you make sure that your TOEFL scores are excellent, and possibly re-take the SAT IIs once you've learnt more advanced subject matter.

Even students in the US who graduate early generally stay on till the 11th (and then again, they don't have qualifying end-of-secondary-school exams like we do), so what you're doing isn't a very sensible idea.

scores are low even for a 10th grader

cool, thanks to all of you guys.
heres some responses to what all of u said.
crims, btw, maybe i made a few spelling mistakes but i really am not that bad at english and get above 92 in school in english.so,i really hope to getaround 110 in toefl.the results would be out on 18th and ill post it here.
my grades are consistently above 90% in all subjects that translates to O in ours school terms.
no,i hv not taken any exams to prove my higher end capabilities.
i know what i m doing isnt a very sensible idea but i just wanted to see where i stood on internatonal level.
then,i saw my sat scores .mit says anything that starts with 7 is good enough for us.i think i got good enough scores given that i studied for only 15 days.
calculus,i hv done that but i still hv got 7 mnths b4 i go to mit(taking the 0.5% probability).
are my sats really bad?
i was runner up in bqc last year.
yes, surprisingly, icse exists in remote areas as well(u know, convent mission schools).
fastmed,i didnt know,700 were low?
my essya, says my counseller can get me into mit.he calls them really good.
i hv not stopped after 10th.i m still in 10th.shocked?
and karan, looks like u were selected no where thats why unlike oter friends who helped me you are bent upon telling a flat no like u r trhe admissions dean at mit.
lol.

here's the catch:-
mit probably doesnt know that i m in tenth.
1)i by mistke ticked one of the 11th grade boxes in the application.just 1 though
2)i said in the application:-'i have not graduated early from secondary school'.i percieve that's right.i am now in high school, not secondary,right/actualy,i am having this confusion due to the difference in education systems of india nd us.
3)My principal didnt mention the grade i m studying in the transcript.
b4 u start mailing to mit that i hv lied,b happy to know that i hv already told them this that i ticked 11th by mistake.
i am a man of integrity and am not going to b selected on the basis of dishonesty, right?thats no use
even if i get selected(a miracle),i have 50-50 chances of going.
i know all these r dreams but you have to dream to succeed.
my counseller and principal etc say hv got a good chance(and they hav ensured me they r not flattering).my counseller is a reputed one and has got admissions into ivies even.he says my application is too presentable to resist for an admissions officer.what do u guys say?
should i post my essay here for review?
will u guys review it here?

How far are you from Patiala, India? Sorry ranojdh your stats do not match the profile of a MIT candidate.

hey
post ur essay if you like...
did u get a response for ur mail to MIT?
a piece of advice : don't give away personal info on the net - u gave away ur name (assuming u did give ur real name) and ur location ...

Do not post your essay here. Consider how many others are interested in applying to MIT. You should select a few that can read & review it for you. I will volunteer to read and review it for you perhaps so p/m(personal message) it to me.

yup
i agree with the above...i didn't think it out well enough, sorry about that

Wait, in what way is your application more presentable than others that apply to MIT? Do you have a certain hook? If yes, then what is it? If you tell us then maybe we can judge better. Also can you elaborate on your extracurriculars a bit more?
