Legacy
I just joined a community service/faith leadership group at my school for senior year
very challenging course load with several AP courses at a very competitive private school that often sends students to ND. I'm taking 5 AP courses next semester.
I'm Catholic
Also, while my school doesn't do class rank, I've talked to my counselor and she said that I'm currently in the top five of my class of ~190

Think I've got a pretty good shot? I'm just really nervous about all of this. Also, should I apply early action?

It depends on who your legacy contact is. It counts, yes, but is highly unlikely to make someone who is a clear reject in the process, an admit unless we are talking about some other heavy duty connections, and even then, it could be dicey or be a sure shot. Again, it depends on who that legacy contact is.

You are solid on the academic side, but not so much on the EC side of things. What other ECs do you have? ND wants to see students who are very involved with the community. You have a decent shot. I would say it is a reach/low reach because your test scores are average and nothing else stands out. Good luck!

I suppose I should have included a more comprehensive list of my ECs. Yeah, I know they are my weak point.

Football 4 years.
Lacrosse 2 years.
Revolution executive committee-- basically a faith leadership/service group. Senior year.
3 years of martial arts during high school, more before that. Almost a black belt.
Participated in a Christian justice/service camp for a week over the summer.
Will participate in automotive and debate clubs as soon as football ends.
Many academic honors at my school (honor roll, high honor roll etc.)
Participated in science fair from grades 9-12, qualified for district/regionals several times. Built a jet engine as my junior year project.

Maybe a few more, I’ll try to add them as I think of them.

Oh, and one more thing: here’s a list of the AP courses I’ve taken or will take.

AP U.S. Gov/Pol
AP English language/composition
AP Physics B
AP Calculus AB
AP English literature/composition
AP Chemistry
AP Statistics
AP Macroeconomics

Also taking a few courses that pertain to my intended major (engineering of some sort, likely mechanical):

Your ECs are solid then. Building a jet engine is impressive, depending on how you show it in your application and how independent the project was.

Thanks. The project was pretty independent, though my Uncle did help me out by letting me use a lot of his tools and helping me with the technicalities of fitting parts/tubing together, etc.

To add one more thing: when I said “4.0 UW gpa, 4.62 weighted on a 5.0 max scale,” I mean that the maximum weighted gpa one can have at my school is a 5.0, though it may not even be possible because you can’t take all honors classes.

I’m going to be really picky and will probably get some grief for this, but your CR score is at the bottom of the mid-range for ND. If I were you, I would submit the ACT and nothing else. As far as being what I would term an “unhooked” legacy (i.e. your last name isn’t on a building, you haven’t donated millions to the school), that will cure the sick, but it won’t raise the dead. I look at your app and think you would be fairly competitive without the legacy connection anyway. If it comes down to you and an applicant with equal stats who isn’t a legacy, you would probably get the nod. Yeah, your EC’s seem kind of thin, but your application overall is decently strong. Make sure your supplemental essays show that you get what ND is about. On the margin, I would apply EA.

I don’t know why you would take the SAT again, when your ACT is so strong. Just submit the ACT. If I were your mom, I would advise you to apply EA. To me, you seem like a strong ND candidate.
