I am currently a senior and I have a 3.775 GPA but my SAT Score is relatively low. I am taking the ACT this Saturday and I feel pretty confident.

I am very weary about applying to UGA due to my SAT score. What are my chances?

very very very low with those sat scores. highest CR + M combined is 870, average was around 400 points more (50%).
ACT may be your best bet. ACT is very curriculum based, and seeing that you are a good at “School- like thinking” you may score very high in the ACT.
the highest one can raise their SAT score is around 300 points, and that still puts you (this year probably) below the 25% range.

Your SAT scores are going to hurt you. Have you passed all of your AP tests?

I honestly don’t know how good of a chance you have at UGA because of those SAT scores. However, your GPA is good and your ECs look good, so that might be enough to balance it out.

I think UGA is definitely going to be a reach for you.

The stats on admitted student for Class of 2014:
High School Core Grade Point Average
Middle 50% of All Enrolled First-Year Students: 3.68 - 4.0
Overall Average of All Enrolled First-Year Students: 3.83

SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students 1800 - 2080
SAT-I Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students (CR&M): 1190 - 1360
Overall SAT-I Average of Admitted First-Year Students: 1263
ACT Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students: 27 -31
Overall ACT Average for Admitted First-Year Students: 28

You are below 25% in every category except GPA. Is the GPA you posted, the UGA GPA or your schools GPA, there is a difference.

I suggest you make sure your essay is amazing and your recommendations are outstanding. You need something that is going to make you stand out.

UGA only uses the grades from your core subjects(math, english, science, history) for GPA and removes any weighting for honors classes. They only add .5 points for AP classes.

your sat scores are way too low for uga…they are looking for around a 1800 now (I talked to some people on the admissions staff :/)
but your ecs might help you out a bit…

I really hope I miraculously get in. Does it mean something when the admissions counselor contacts you directly, encouraging you to apply? I don’t know why or how they got my contact information

Well I don’t think the admissions counselor contacting you means anything special.
UGA really goes out of their way to get new freshman! After being admitted they gave me a water bottle (upon visiting), a phone call, a t-shirt and a dog tag…and I haven’t even sent in my $200 attendance fee!

BUT I will say that I didn’t find your stats to be that bad. While the SAT was really low, UGA considers that to the the third most important aspect of one’s application. They go in this order:
GPA, Course Rigor, Test Scores, ECs

Your GPA is pretty standard, but your course rigor exceeds the usual student’s classes. You also have some good ECs.

I really hate standardized testing because I believe it’s one of the worst ways to judge a student’s aptitude!

They SHOULD notice that you have the ability to do well in their school, based on your courses and not your test scores! And if you got a 4+ on every exam, they’ll definitely see that you have the ability to do well.

@coolpg: So 7 AP courses and the rest honors exceeds the usual student’s classes? Would that be enough AP classes to be a competitive Honors applicant? Or does it depend entirely on the school? I’m curious b/c I plan to go to Honors and I want to know how many APs I need to take to have a good shot…

Honors wants you to challenge yourself. There’s no minimum number of APs you must take to be competitive for Honors. To the best of my knowledge, you’ll be competing with the entire pool of Honors applicants, not just those from your school or region. If you want a better idea of where you stand in the pool, I’d recommend checking out the [Honors class profile](First Year Experience - UGA Morehead Honors College), especially the GPA information.

Best of luck with your Honors application, upsidedown. Also, good luck with your RD application, xdmp.
